Had the first long drive in my NC2 yesterday and noticed what I would call a fidgeting noise coming from the door sort of next to my left ear, a tad annoying…
Is this the type of issues these bushing will solve….??
Hi JWithi, no, I didn’t replace the dovetails. When I tried the bushings in them the bushings fitted neatly. They were an interference fit, in fact the passenger side was actually quite tight.
Regarding your noise I’m not sure whether this mod will cure that.
My car does feel taughter, smoother and quieter at times too.
It’s tough to quantify though because it has lowered, stiffer suspension and old OE bushes in the rear suspension. There is still plenty of crashing over uneven surfaces.
If it helps to gauge whether or not you’d feel any benefit and by comparison, my car is a 2000 W, 150K mile NB.
In a converible, the front and back wheels are only connected by the floor, so lots of twisting.
Imho, the bushes help stiffen things up so the suspension deflects more and the body twists less.
This may well help your fidgety noises but there can be no guarantees.
Just a random thought on this subject as I sit here quietly filling in time.
So all these flex forces are still there when we have these bushes fitted so where do they now go?
One might assume that the door bushes allow for flex deliberately by design so now these forces are being applied to the door hinges and the door shut panel. Is the door itself able to deal with them? Are all these parts designed to take these extra forces or are we storing up some issues for the future?
Sorry must go now as the washing is now finished and we can go for a walk!!!
Potentially there are many benefits from changing the bushings for very little cost, and they do seem to come up a lot in lists of inexpensive mods so it’s definitely something I’m going to try I think…
the video shows they move less, and suggests in description some change to NVH. But not at miracle levels. A little rubber bush can’t support the twisting of an entire 1100kg car. But for £15 it looks like a small measurable improvement. That may possibly be amplified under even tougher driving conditions, e.g. smashing over a kerb on track.
Lets see if in a few years time, there are some NC and ND door handle failures, because they broke after too much hard slamming./ hard pulling. Those assemblies aren’t cheap.
Lets see 3 videos with each, and 3 videos with a brand new Mazda rubber block. The difference appears insignificant. Might not be even on the same roads, same speed.
Your video shows that you have the ‘later’ door cups (I believe these were changed from ND2 onwards) that do NOT fit the door bushes. The slack that you show clearly indicates this and I can also see that the shape is not a match for the bushes.
Not my video. Not my car. After 25 years of MX5 ownership, I see no compelling argument that convinces me that I need these parts. I think these parts are a waste of money, but others will disagree.
I can’t remember where I got my delrin door bushes, I think it was maybe rev9 or something a while ago, but when I fitted mines they needed sanding down a bit so the doors would close nicely without having to properly slam them, then opening them was just as much as an ordeal
A little bit of sanding later and a semi regular top up of wd40 on them and theyre still nice and solid but easier to operate the doors.
You don’t need to shoulder barge them from the inside to get out the car now
