Despite the excellent fast road geo done by the lateTony at now defunct Wheel in Motion several years ago, I’ve managed to have a couple of off road events (obviously due to diesel spills and definitely not me giving it too many beans around curves in the wet!). Plus I’ve installed Bilstein PSS10s, so that has lowered the car and increased camber all around. The PSS10s springs have now settled and I’m ready for another fast road alignment. Who are the go to MX-5 expert alignment shops now that WiM are no longer an option. I’m base in King’s Lynn Norfolk, but happy to travel for good service.
I bought tyres from NickD and then had the alignment sorted at Northampton Motorsport, they did a good job see the printout in my previous post for the settings they used.
Now a year and a half later the car feels utterly planted, 100% predictable. So I’m very happy with the results.
I’m only an hour away but for you double that travel time easily. Can recommend Roddisons in Sheffield, he’s the go to guy. If your that inclined, have a day out shopping at Meadowhall whilst you wait for the car.
Also closer to you, Thrushington garage, Leicestershire for alignment I’ve never used them though.
I’ve no personal experience of these but they’ve been around for a good few years and have MX-5s in their photos on their website.
Vincent’s Motorworks (formerly Cleverley Repaired Cars) in Stradbroke have done mine very well in the past. They’ve got a decent Hunter setup and have aligned thousands of MX5s.
@Tucker highly recommend Vincent.
Thanks for all the recommendations, when I’ve got a bit more time (in the midst of refresheing our kitchen this week) I’ll look in to all the places and go from there. Distance isn’t a deal breaker, as the drive back can give the car a good workout.
Another shout for Vincent in Stradbroke, we’ve just replaced the lower wishbones and are booked in, in a couple of weeks for the complete 4 wheel alignment again.
My Mk2 was at Vincent’s for a week very recently where they replaced the front chassis legs and performed a four wheel alignment. The workmanship for the former was absolutely first class and the alignment transformed the handling although Vincent recommended that I replace the budget tyres as they were essentially cr@p!! Uniroyal Rainsports that he recommended are on order to be fitted on Tuesday morning by a local tyre outfit.
Another Shout for Vincent’s Motor Works, for the last 10 years plus I haven’t gone anywhere else… absolute 1st class service
I couldn’t find it on Vincent’s web site, do they use the Hunter 4-wheel laser alignment machine?
Yes, although a couple of weeks ago they didn’t have a printer for it. I suggest that you ask them to take photos of the before/after results on their display.
Excellent
I still take mine to wheels in motion (black boots) protyre now , in Chesham. Very good and can highly recommend them, highly accurate with their adjustments and they set your desired specific readings.
This place certainly does not go just by stock settings which most garages will, they really go out of there way to give top class service.
My 2001 MX-5 NB is decidedly skittish on bumpy road surfaces whether they are bends or straight roads. It seems the wheel alignment might need to be checked. Is this a specialist task or can a local garage carry this procedure out? I live in West Kent.
You might want to check your shock absorbers as well. Sounds like a dodgy shocker might be the issue.
Any garage with the equipment can carry out a wheel alignment but the end result will only be as good as the tech carrying out the work. Most techs could probably adjust things to get green numbers on a screen, click print then tighten everything up and in doing so change the alignment. If you trust your garage to do it properly then no reason it to use them.
