All the brake calipers have been removed. These are being sent off to Bigg Red to be refurbished as new and painted gold This should go nicely with the metalic black paint finish the MX-5e will eventually be painted.
The discs were super rusty and the front pads down to 2mm. All the discs are being replaced and EBC new Greenstuff pads being fitted. Stainless-steel braided brake hoses are qalso being fitted.
I did paint a few pieces to see how it turned out. It was OK. We needed to remove the dash though to service everything behind it. All the foam has turned to dust. The whole wiring loom is being replaced with a new one that supports CAN bus. The air-con is going. We are even contemplating a custom dash which will be much lighter in weight.
We have to replace the camshft cover gasket in our MX-5e as it was leaking oil everywhere. We took the opportunity to clean up and repaint the cover, so that it can be swapped with the one in Yoko (my son’s 1990 Eunos Roadster). It has come out really well considering this was our first attempt at doing this
Having removed the dash in the MX-5e, we have also taken it apart. Plan A is to see if we can make up a curvy, custom dash based upon the metal support frame within it. We took and angle grinder to it to remove the unwanted brackets and rubbed it down to remove the surface rust. It has now been treated with an etch primer.
In a 30+ year-old car, anything made of foam or rubber is crumbling. So we are refurbishing things like this fan unit as new. It has been completely taken apart, cleaned and new neoprene rubber tape seals installed. Any rusty parts were treated and repainted. It has made us realise that we need to do the same thing to Yoko now.
We have now cleaned up and painted the front hubs, dust gaurds and fitted new track rod ends. Just need to complete the braking system and we can then go for an MOT
Hadn’t planned to get into this level of restoration quite yet but, we are awaitiung parts to fix the electric windows and complete the doors. So we started removing the right wing. Amazingly little rust consider this is a 1992 car This is all being cleaned up, rust treated and undersealed.
