I asked the DVLA for MX51 MJR (my initials) They made it available and I bought it through their auction process.

It’s currently on retention and will go on my :100:Anniversary MX5. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I just looked on the twinternet for my ideal number - MX51ANS and interestingly it came up on a Fiat 500 registered in 2011. It had also failed an MOT due to incorrect spacing of the numbers/letters on the plate! wonder if I could find the owner?

If only you could locate mot station from the long number and give them a call to ask the owner! Nosey but don’t ask don’t get. Know any mot tester?

You’d have to give it a little space on show plates! Text book plate. Must be a cheap place when in its normal format.

The fact that the person had it illegally spaced suggests it mean something to them, but on a Fiat 500? Not so sure… May look into it. thanks

Yeah can’t see what the first bit means to that person. Only way to get a bit of Ian’s I suppose.

Mine is Y7 GOO, the GOO is part of my surname (and sounds fun) the Y7 was from when I bought the first MX5 with the intention of buying an Exocet kit and having Why7 seemed a good idea (i.e. Why Caterham?).

Plus the fact it was only £250 from the dvla at the time… Most folks think the numberplate is worth more than the car.

Maybe they had an MX5 before the Fiat and transferred the number

Thats what I figured… only way it makes sense.

It depends on what you want of course - go onto the DVLA web site and see if there’s 'owt you fancy. I started by searching for a number plate with certain letters in it, and took it from there.
I got R2 RMU about 10 years back from the DVLA for £255, suits me down to the ground since it reflects my name. At the time it was in the lowest DVLA price bracket, and included transferring it to the car. Will go on another car when I sell the MX5 'cos its not MX5-specfic! (Yup I’ve had the same MX5 for all that time …)

When I bought mine there was an option on the DVLA website to “request” a number plate that hadn’t been released. They then checked if it could be made available, if so they then offer it up for auction.
You then get to bid for it with everyone else.
Thankfully with mine no one else was interested, so I won the plate at £280 including the transfer fee and VAT
MJR are my initials.

Saw MX05 KAR on a white nc in Budleigh Salterton today.
Lady driver.

My wife bought me my private MX-5-specific plate for my 65th birthday. It features my initials (CP), the year I was born (54), and MXS. The ‘S’ looks like a ‘5’ at a quick glance, and was close enough for me.

I’ve noticed a few other members have used the same thinking, and when we were looking on the DVLA web site at the time, there were loads of other similar letter / number combinations using MXS - all for the basic £250.00 all in.
