NB 05 Icon in Chilli Orange New Owner, North Dorset

Hi,

I’ve picked up my first project car a couple of weeks ago. A lovely little Chilli Orange Icon 1.8.

I’ve wanted an MX-5 since I was a kid but been a golf owner all my driving life. Time finally came to start that dream.

Don’t get me wrong I love my GTi but I didnt expect how much of a smile this little bundle of joy would permanently embed on my face.

We’re in North Dorset bordering Somerset and Wiltshire could use a friend or two that knows their stuff. I’m handy enough but relatively new to this.

Also a web dev by trade and if this wordpress site could use some love hit me up if I can help.

David

Thank you! It comes with a few comforts and necessities already sorted;

Underbelly has been coated and cavities waxed at a restorer, some rust work on the sills done. T R Lane Roll bars, aluminium japspeed radiator.

I’m just servicing it up get a fresh MOT on it and store in the garage til spring hopefully there’s a bit more sun for it before then though!!

Want to move the plate to the side and get a import style plate anyone with smart tips on filling the plate holes left over in the bumper. Heavily appreciated

Welcome aboard.

That’s a smashing model and colour you’ve chosen.

It’s definitely worth trying to use the car in the winter from time to time.

Crisp winter days in the sunshine with the top down are nothing to fear. Wrap up warm and enjoy. Stay away from salty roads though. Ideally follow some rain so it washes most of the salt away.

Regarding the holes in your front bumper. Although the colour of your car is fabulous it will be tough to blend in. I suspect that a full bumper respray might be necessary after filling the holes.

Others might disagree of course but these mica metallics can be very quirky.

I hope you continue to bring us all updates on your modifications and adventures.

Have fun.

Cheers,

Guy

Thank you!

To be honest I found it such a stress cure after work it might have to come out in Winter!

Mmm, I figured the same thing regarding the holes and have heard similar regarding mica. I’m not adverse to getting it filled and sprayed but was also wondering if anyone had any smart stop gap ideas for the holes or even clever uses for them. I was considering finding some kind of grommet and some matching paint for a temporary fix, like bumperplugs.com do

I confess I didn’t know those plugs existed.

They look like an ideal stop gap solution and with a 19 stage procedure they ought to be long lasting and perfectly colour matched.

Not cheap for what they are (don’t forget Donald’s tariffs will probably double the cost!:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:) but they look great in the images.

If you go with them I’d be interested in your thoughts.

I’ve sent them an enquiry, they don’t have 33J listed as a colour so I’ve asked the question and asked if they’ll ship to our little island

Fingers crossed

Just bought myself a private plate so I guess this is happening!

Your car’s colour is known as Lava Orange in the USA, may help get a match.

+1 for respray though, thats what I did for both of mine.

Welcome David Tomb1 from ditto :handshake:

Chilli Orange Icon 1.8 [2005] owned since 2007 currently in Staffs

Delighted to see another owner taking on an NB as a ‘project car’ :joy:

[Bullit wasn’t that when I bought her but since has had welding, her cills replaced and undersealing done]
About to have other ‘life scars’ and respray done

Labour of love …living the dream…you won’t be disappointed…why I still have my girl

Plenty of folk your neck of the woods will be available to help as soon as they recognise a devotee

Thank you!

Ah thanks they’ve asked for a photo of the door jamb so gonna grab that a little later today and I’ll pass that on too!

Fits in beautifully there!

Nice to meet you! Haven’t settled on a name for the car yet new plate is more just a fun MX-5 one than anything personal. I was thinking a nice generic English chaps name maybe or maybe Japanese for a native orange flower or chilli perhaps.

Anyway! Thanks, servicing and a new MOT are top of the list as well as a good inside clean. I’ve Nikwax tent & gear solarproofed the softtop as it looked to be wetting out. Still needs more love in the folds to get rid of mold, advice deeply appreciated.

Already lubed up all the squeaky bits and tweaked the throttle. I find throttle a little jumpy when pulling away from idle revs my guess is engine mounts but open to easier fixes. Already checked if the throttle is sticky and everything seems to move smoothly.

Other updates is garage has been organised so she fits in easy. I just have to get a bit fitter!!

Would it be good practice to find a place in the forum where I can document the process and time spent on the car like a journal of everything we’ve worked on?

Hi again Tom B

I named Bullit after her shape and speed with a nod to ‘cool dude’ Steve McQueen and his movie Bullitt which featured a Mustang :joy:

As advised by fellow posters I now use ‘Autoglym Soft Top Clean and Protect Complete Kit’ [but it depends on how bad the mold is]

The place on the Forum to document is the Thread

‘What have you done to your MX-5 today [Part 2]’

Meanwhile………’getting a bit fitter’………..there are a number of us on here where that boat has sailed….we just keep plodding on

Usually if you put a thought into the search then someone at some time will have had the same thought so there is probably a thread or two !

Exciting isn’t it to own a potential ‘Classic’ car [feel free to experience a little smugness :innocent: ]

This morning in Tesco a young chap approached saying ‘Oh my mom had one of those……she taught me to drive in it ! I love your car !’
