NC Boot Spoiler But not for PRHT?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __nc2
  2. I’m based near: __grantham
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __boot spoiler.

so once my need-to-do list is finished, I will start work on my want todo list!
and at the top of my want todo list is a boot spoiler!
I don’t want a horrible little lip spoiler, neither do I want a stupid great GT wing.
I’m looking for something more traditional, iv found a few that i like but in every case they say “NOT FOR PRHT”
so my question is why? why cant i put this type of spoiler on my PRHT?

examples of the type of spoiler i want.

I have never seen a softop and a prht side by side, but I have read on this forum that their boot lids and rear wings are different.
That could explain it. It surely doesn’t look like a clearance issue when operating the roof.

Apparently the rear wings have a different curvature, maybe the boot lid does too.
Could also be they are being cautious because of the clearance thing (as pointed out above) re the folding deck.
I’ve got a small (cheapo) spoiler to stick on the boot lid, not really sure about it though, whether it’s pleasing to the eye.

yes, it turns out that the soft top and hardtop have different back ends.
so what will fit one won’t fit the other.
as to the difficulty in finding spoilers for the hardtop, I suspect that it is because of the economic effects of covid,

it seems mx5 parts have added this since I last looked or maybe I just didn’t notice it before.
it says it is for RHT which I presume means roof hardtop.

looks ok but I would like to see some pictures from different angles.

A rear spoiler that fits MK1’s and all MK3’s? Strange.
And it is very expensive. You can get this type of “one fits all” boot lip on BayofE’s for less than a 100 quids. We got one for the SLK then for its replacement the SLC, made in the same material as this. But I think the OP wants something quite different.

gotta be honest I am not a fan of those ducktail spoilers!

I really want something VERY similar to what’s on the blue MG in the picture but made for the mx5 NC.

both the rallybacker and mx5-parts one are only as wide as the boot lid.
I want one on which the ends will tip down into the line of the rear wings.

however, after an hour of searching, it looks like there is nothing other than a choice between the aforementioned mx5 parts and the rallybacker.

yes there are the GT wings but they are just too overstated! and quite honestly would look and feel silly on an everyday driver, street car.

this one is extremely nice but sadly not for the hard top

I have just clocked that you are the OP… Sorry.

no worries mate!

i wonder if there is a car body kit shop anywhere in the UK that i could visit and then spend an hour offering spoilers up to see if they fit and how they look?

Depends on how many of their options they have in stock on site I guess.

We do have a chap on here that is “extremely proficient and professional” at making adapting things for the MX5.
I believe he had an NC before his current ND?
I have no idea whether he could make you one or indeed how much it might even cost.
May be able to give you other advice?
But give him a PM and he can only say no.
Do a search and it will pop him up. :+1:

The boot lid profile of the soft top and folding hardtop models are slightly different - I think the hardtop model was flatter to accommodate the folded top - guessing that that’s why the spoilers aren’t interchangeable

other way round more curved to be taller to fit the PRHT

Ahh, knew they were different - thanks for clarifying.

You could design your own and make one out Carbon fibre there are kits out in the market place or make one out of fibre/glass composite a lot of time and effort but it depends on what you want I made my own as I make a Lot of stuff but would not make for anyone else do to the liability factor and time if you want a one off making then be prepared to pay £££ big bucks the only way around that is mates rates or do it your self

I started my own spoiler in august 2020 did not fit it till may 2021 year…

and I am still working on the mounts I am going to lower the spoiler by another 22mm later next month then I think it will look more aesthetically pleasing & pass the MOT…

Cost me around £120.00 and took over 200 hours as there is so much more involved not just making this the mounts, the electrics, MOT regs with ref to the Rear 3rd brake light , RF Roof interaction, etc, ect,

nice work.

personally, I’m not at the point where i am considering having one made.

I haven’t yet given up on finding an off-the-shelf one.
though to be honest I think I will either do one of 2 things
either find one off of an MG or something like that and have the fittings altered to fit mine
or
just buy the mx5parts one

but I’ve got a couple of months to think about it and to keep looking and hopefully get more suggestions from members here.

When I bought my NC it already had a boot spoiler which I was told it originally came from a Hyundai Coupe.

I’m afraid I don’t currently have access to the car to take a pic, but this is from a current listing on Ebay that I’m pretty sure is the same or very similar. And it seems the same people (in the Czech Republic) do several other versions and all at what seems like a very reasonable price.

SPOILER REAR BOOT TRUNK FITS FOR HYUNDAI ELANTRA WING ACCESSORIES | eBay

thank you very very much @plip1953

I have just looked through all their spoilers on eBay.
they don’t do an mx5 one but they do some Mazda ones,
so I have sent them a message to ask if they do one for the mx5 hardtop or if any of the existing spoilers fit the mx5 hardtop.

hopefully, they will mail me back and we can sort something out.
il keep you all informed.

ok, I got a reply from the eBay seller.
he doesn’t do one for the mx5.
however, he says that the following 4 could be suitable.

so he’s sent the diagrams but I am not technical and I am out of my depth with them.

from looking at them i think spoiler 1 is probably the closest curve but i am also probably wrong!!!

anyway here are the diagrams he sent

spoiler 2

spoiler 3

and lastly
spoiler 4

so which of these would best match the rear curve of the boot lids on the hardtop
and
which of these would best match the soft-top
to be honest, length doesn’t matter so much as most body shops will be able to shorten or lengthen.
it is the curve that’s the important bit.

anyway, the conundrum is set, who will solve it?

ok, I just took some rough, very rough considering it’s 3 am and rather dark.
so measuring a straight line across the back boot lid from the end of the top. is 106 cm or 1060mm
measuring the top wing in a straight line from the edge of the boot lid to the end of the rear light is max 12 cm, tho I would hazard you would want the end of the spoiler to stop at 8 cm so it can blend down properly into the line.
so if we say an 8 cm overhang on the wing that gives a total width of 122cm.
or with nobody line blend at a max width of 130cm

oh my god, this is making my head hurt.

so I’m thinking either the last diagram of spoiler 1 or the last diagram of spoiler 4 for the hardtop!

edit:
changed my mind, I now think that I want spoiler 4 pics 2.
as that one don’t have the endplates and at 118cm wide it will be 6 cm past the edge of the boot lid each side which should blend nicely, if the curve is right?..
