NC Bose CD autochanger confused/stuck

I have a mk3.5 MX5 with a standard Bose CD autochanger.

It had 2 CDs in it and i pressed Load instead of Eject by mistake, therefore there was no CD ready to load. Now all it does is say ‘Check CD’ and refuses to play any CD. The radio is fine.

I’ve tried to pull the relevant fuses to the audio unit to try to reset it. But it’s not helping.

Any ideas apart from taking it to an expert?

If not, can someone recommend somewhere i could take it in Essex, preferably near Chelmsford?

I had the same issue. Here is a link to the post I put up relating to it.

I guess it depends on how you feel about getting in and removing the head to explore further.
On the upside at nearly four and a half years later … it’s still working perfectly.
Hope that helps in some small way.

Thanks, that’s a very detailed explanation.

I’ve only had the car a few months and i’ve never dismantled anything like that much of a car. So i think i might the banging on the dash or pressing the buttons before taking it to a specialist.

Do you remember which buttons you were told to press?

I can’t recall what buttons I pressed. I do recall unloading and loading discs for quite a while, maybe 9 or 10 times on the trot and then one registered and played. If you have one keep trying with a cleaning disc as it may clean the laser enough to get it registering again. I have the type with the cluster of tiny brush heads on the face of the disc.
Banging on the dash. It was in reality a bit like rapid chops with the side of the hand, like a masseur might use to ease a muscle. Would not go thumping with any undue force.
If you do try and fettle it yourself the trickiest bit is removing the security bolt … that can be a bit of a so and so.

Good luck

So i thought i’d have a go at switching to the CD player and drumming the dash get it unstuck. But it just started to play a CD without help!

Hurray!

Maybe it wasn’t anything physical stopping it playing, it just gave up trying to find the 3rd CD that wasn’t there?

Anyway, i decided i wanted to play the other CD in the autochanger but i wasn’t sure what button to press. After trying the number buttons i foolishly pressed ‘Load’ again. Guess what? It went back to saying ‘Check CD’ and not responding to any button presses!

I’ve tried offering it another CD to eat but it just says ‘CD Out’ and then back to ‘Check CD’.

It does now seem like the CD autochanger can’t handle the idea of me pressing ‘Load’ and there being no CD to swallow. Can this be true? And is there a way to reset it?

Last update. The CD player allowed me to eject the last CD. Again, it was totally random when it decided to stop saying ‘Check CD’.

I will have a play with CD i don’t care about to see what happens.
