NC fog lights

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC 2007 1.8 Icon
  2. I’m based near: Blackpool
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Fog lights

Another question,
I’ve had the car a couple of weeks only.
My question is about the front fogs, which are wired and in situ but dont work, the rear fogs work ok but the odd thing is the steering wheel stalk only has a single switching position for the rear fogs, therefore no switch for the fronts. Dash display lights up as it should when rear are on.
Any pointers or is this normal

Charlie

The Icon didn’t have front fogs fitted from factory, not an extra. The wiring I believe is there to fit in the fogs, just buy the kit which included the light stalk to swap out you light stalk which included the front fog switch position.
Maybe the last owner fitted the lights but didn’t get around to fitting the stalk switch required?
The kit below, or if only the switch required maybe a secondhand one from a breaker, eBay etc, make sure it’s includes front and rear fog switching of course.

I fitted front fogs to my 2010 1.8 SE. Bought the kit from MX5 Parts and this came complete with a new steering column stalk which incorporates the two (rotary) switches necessary- one for front fogs and one for rear fogs.
So I think MickAP is correct…someone has fitted the front fog lights but hasn’t fitted the new stalk with the necessary switch to operate them. Cosmetically, they may have just liked the look of the fog lights instead of the black plastic blanking plates…but the wiring is there, accessible by pulling the wheel arch liner aside, and fitting the new steering column stalk is “plug and play”. I imagine the necessary stalk is available @ Mx5 Parts, or you could easily find one from a car with front fogs fitted as standard, in a breakers yard. Good Luck.

Thanks guys, they seem to be wired, i assume the relay will be to, just no stalk.looks like another job
:joy::joy:

Silly question, but have you checked that they are not wired so that they come on with the sidelights or headlights?

Yes there wired but don’t come on anyway you try. Ssounds like i need a new stalk

Another silly question, have they been wired as DRLs (ie on with ignition, but off when headlights on), and through daily use the bulbs have failed?

How do i check that

Have you actually tested the bulbs?

Could be as Richards suggestion, check where the wiring goes and for extra wiring in the engine bay/battery connections. My last NC had DRL’s (not in the fog lights though) they were wired from battery and to the cars main lights.

Lights aren’t on in the day either

Have you actually tested the bulbs?

Hmm, it means taking off a lower bit of front wheel arch liner.

Here’s what I did with fitting DRLs on my 2008 NC. Your 2007 should have the same factory wiring to the H11 bulb connector.

My pictures show the fog light, its H11 bulb connector, and then the mod wiring too.

Fog to DRL+Fog mod

My Sport tec has front fogs as standard, but I literally only use them to test that they work prior to the MOT.

Rather than doing the work with the stalk to get them working, I’d be inclined to remove them and fit those brake cooling vent things instead.

stalk is available from ebay - about £20 takes 15 mins to fit, pretty easy

Have you a link to this? Thanks. DDL’s that is.

Check out the video in the link below. DRL’s wired to the front indicators. You need the special bulbs in the kit, eBay do the kits.
I didn’t fit these BTW the previous owner did Geoff, (was his car, I bought it and have now parted with it) if he sees the post he may suggest where he bought them.
