NC sump removal in car

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC
  2. I’m based near: __Sussex
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Sump removal

I understand removing the sump is possible without dropping the subframe. As I hope I will “only” need to hone the bores/re-ring and change big ends, this would be helpful.

So are there any hints/tips/links to help me out? I have a hoist, various jacks/axle stands etc etc and this doesn’t scare me, but I always appreciate advice

I know I could take it to a garage/specialist, but I am happy to rebuild engines etc. So no need.
All I want are some pointers on in-car sump removal. That is my preference over pulling the engine out altogther, but if I have to, so be it.

Undo the bolts? Lol

I’ve had the pistons out on my 1.8NC to do the rings and have a couple of threads on here about it. This one may help -
Ignore Haynes manual!
I left the block insitu.
Jack the front end up high, head off, timing chain off, I found that jacking the block about 1 inch off the front mounts and packing with bits of wood helps lowering the sump from underneath.
Haynes manual helps with the head and chain but useless for pistons out as it says it’s not possible.
There are some instructions online but it’s not that hard, just be prepared for oil dripping on your face while working underneath!

That is fab, thank you

Did you manage to get it off, any tips?

Sadly I have not touched the MX5 yet.
I am nearing the end of a Dolomite Sprint mechanical rebuild, which is taking longer than anticipated. At least that engine is in and runs, just the axle to finish up, prop and exhaust. And then see if I can get some decent sized front brakes to fit.
Once that is done the MX5 can have the space in the garage. I will report back once I get started.

Hi, I had a very smokey NC and went through the process of changing the PCV valve and it seems to have cured it. But it was a real pain as it sits under the intake manifold. This is not so much of a problem but undoing and doing up the EGR pipe is a nightmare - removing the access panel under the wipers helps, and with cut down spanners…Possibly use a plumbers wrench. To be honest, if I had to do it again I think I would go through the hassle of pwering the engine for better access. It seems to have cured the problem. One tip to see if your engine is pressurising - zip tie a rubber glove over the oil filler and see how much it inflates…it will inlate a little if okay but if it dramatically expands then the PCV valve is likely stuck or blocked. When in there take off the plastic oil separator and check if it’s gunked up. Good luck !

Hopefully you have dodged a bullet by clearing out the PCV then. 99% of the time it is the rings clogged up on early smokey NC’s
Worth noting that knackered piston rings would do the same with a glove as all of the compression is going past the rings into the crank case then out the oil filler cap into the glove.
