I’m looking for some help from those who have TEIN flex z installed. I fitted mine and I can’t get along with them. Very unsettled over humps, on the motorway it’s so unsettled, constantly bouncing to the point that I felt sick. The stock were bilsteins with lowered eibach and they felt amazing compared to these TEINs. They were the originals and started to knock. The ride height is the same as I had before. Now I know these are coilovers, but surely they shouldn’t be so bouncy on motorways/country roads. I haven’t messed with the pre-load, and the adjustment I turned it 2 clicks down(15/16 clicks) from where they were in the middle. I started with the softest setting but it was worse, it got better as I hardened the dampness but I never found a setting I liked. I’m very tempted to revert to the old broken shocks. Have I missed a trick?
I’ve not got this brand , I’ve fitted HSD Monopro.
Instructions from HSD , softest setting for 200-300 miles (to settle)
What’s Teins take on set up ?
on the manual it says to go to the hardest setting and turn 8 clicks back.
It really shouldn’t feel like that. I have them and even on their softest settings they hardly ‘bounce’. I agree with what’s already been said, turn the damping adjuster clockwise fully and then anti clockwise 8 clicks. This is a good starting point. I find 8 is fine for better roads, not far off stock. I use 12 rear 10 front regularly as my roads aren’t great and it’s as soft as stock with those settings.
Also make sure you don’t exceed 16 clicks from full hard. It will go further than that, but 16 is the limit. Anything upwards of 8 will be softer and more comfortable but not as sharp, anything below will sharpen and firm it up but could make for a more jittery ride.
Make sure the suspension was all tightened up with the wheels on the ground or the weight of the car on the suspension, if you tightened all the bushing bolts up at full droop your bushings will be acting as a spring as well and stop the dampers doing what they should do.
I have the exact same settings and I keep getting bounced out of my seat whenever I go for a bump in the road, I describe it as having no suspension.
How low are you running the car ?
If it is too low you may be contacting the bump stops giving the harsh feeling.
I don’t think it matters because you adjust the bottom and the spring rate remains the same. But it’s not that low, with two people in the car I can drive over those wide speedbumps down the middle without touching. You can fit a shoe in the arch gap
as an update I’ve decided I’m going to sell them as I can’t live with these, it’s making me hate the car. At £850 not the cheapest but I’m glad I didn’t spend any more than that.
There must be something wrong with the parts or the setup. Have you got hold of the manufacturer? They should feel controlled. I’ve had them on 2 cars now and aside from if you set them too hard (where they’ll pick up everything) they should be perfectly good for the road. Even on the softest setting they shouldn’t be bouncing around. Certainly not a track focused Coilover but I went for mine because track suited setups will be even more unforgiving day to day…
It’s a competitive market so they wouldn’t get away with a ■■■■ product.
I consider myself a fine spannerman but I’m still hunting a harsh rear NS knock since I did the change to lowered springs….
But they’re not a **** product (or whatever word you used). Like Dean, I’ve used them previously and on my last NC2 and I’ll be picking up an ND set when the time comes.
As said, I can only presume there was a manufacturing defect or similar here. If other setup/install problems have been ruled out. Hence the suggestion to contact the supplier or Tein direct. Before giving up with them.
I’ve found them to be really well suited to the NC and delivered a more compliant, comfortable and confidence inspiring setup than OEM. Whilst delivering a really good track/sprint/hillclimb stiffness and directness, if required
Cheers,
Steve
I’ll post some pictures just for reference. Just in case someone spots anything. Also perhaps I should add, all bushes have been replaces with energy suspension, their road version. Another thing to note, which i’m a bit sceptical about TEIN offering any supports. In their manual, it clearly states, offroad use only as they are not road legal, and only an authorised garage to perform the install in order for aby warranty to hold. I did these myself.
If there’s a defect with them depending on who supplied you shouldnt have to go to the manufacturer depending on what their customer service is like.
On another note I have had a car that was fully poly bushed on coilovers (s15 silvia) and I won’t be doing that again unless I ever built a dedicated track car which I probably won’t. I’m actually not surprised you’re finding it difficult to put up with, I’d never fully poly bush a road car again - they might be pin sharp once dialled in, but they’re not as nice on my opinion.
Sometimes though it’s counter-intuitively it’s necessary to firm up the damping to make it more comfortable. There’s normally a sweet spot somewhere, just a case of finding it.
Oh, and most performance/aftermarket parts say off road use only just to cover themselves. Then they’ll describe how well suited the products are for road use in the blurb. Go figure…
yes I had polybushed a fabia and an SLK and they didn’t ruined it for me, I can’t imagine it’s because of this reason I’m getting launched out of my seat.
I have them on my 30AE & find them perfect. They were installed & set-up by BBR, I am way past the age of doing jobs like this myself!
I consider getting under my car the equivalent of a gym but without the subscription.
I have the Tein Flex Z fitted and have also fully poly bushed with the energy suspension kit.
Ride height is 340 each end.
Full Rodders alignment with corner weighting done.
Dampers set at 10F and 12R ( from fully hard )
Feels similar to the Bilsteins that came off
So I’ve set them up to 14R/13FR
Here’s a YouTube video of basically me driving and you can see at times I’m getting bounced around. It’s a combination of B roads and motorway.
And what have you set ride height at? Measured wheel centre to arch.
