ND 1.5, 6 year service

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ND 1.5
  2. I’m based near: __Sheffield
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: 6 yr service._

Hi All,
The 6 year service on our ND 1.5 is now due.
The last service was done at a main dealer as we still had extended warranty on the MX5 from when we bought it in Sept 2019.
That same dealer has quoted £499 for the 6 yr service.
I’m thinking of doing the service myself which will include,
Filters and eng oil
Spark plugs
Brake fluid.

I know we wont get the digital stamp in their service record book, but we’re not intending to get rid of the MX just now so not bothered about that as regards resale value.

Can anyone give any advice/tips on carrying out the service ?
Also best service parts to fit, plugs, oil, filters etc, Mazdas own or good branded after market ?
Am l right in saying l’ll need 5w30 engine oil and not 0w20 oil
Cheers Bob.

I service mine myself including differential and gearbox oils, I use 5w30 (Mobil 1 ESP) for the engine and Millers Oils for the diff and gearbox. The servicing is pretty simple, they are easy cars to work on.

Can independent garages get access to the Mazda digital service history and update it?

When I had a Merc, the independent garage I used was able to update the Mercedes digital service history.

Some can yes, I’m not sure what Mazda’s requirement is for access to be given but I am aware some independents have it,.

Also shop around for service prices, there can be big differences.
I guess it’s the spark plug change bumping up the price, expect they are iridium plugs at £20 each or similar.
Brake fluid could maybe wait to bring the price down, when was it last changed?

MX-5 parts have a service kit, oil, filter, air filter, washer and spark plugs for £168.

Recommend this if you are going to be doing your own oil change

Oil drain valve

This is the model for the MX5 ND, no adapter needed.

Hi and thanks for replys.
My regular MOT garage l use quoted “around” £250 mark. Said he can’t access the Mazda service register because the software etc required and red tape it isn’t worth the cost.
He recommended getting a generic service book of eBay, which I’ve done, and he can stamp that.
But as I’m an ex mechanic who always services and repairs my own cars I’m thinking of doing it myself. Probably use genuine parts though.
The car has only done just under 2k miles since last service, so might leave the brake fluid for now.
Don’t know when it was last changed.

Would have thought brake fluid and possibly coolant at 6 years if its never been done. E-record will show brake fluid change. My ND brake fluid was changed at its 2 year service according to the online record.

I’ve got a Fumoto (F106S) valve fitted too, makes servicing just that bit easier. My brake fluid hasn’t been changed since the Wilwoods were fitted but I’m going to get a local MX-5 specialist to that later this year.

If you look on the Mazda service app it will show when the brake fluid was last done, you just need to VIN to add the car in to the app.
Print that history also and staple it in your service book.
Think they recommend every 2 years.

Brake fluid change at 2 years seems a bit OTT for me?

…like the drain plug do da thing…wish they had them around when I was doing all my own servicing!

Iirc the brake fluid change intervals shortened drastically to 2 years for most manufacturers when it became apparent that the pump assemblies that operate the abs/cbc/Ediff systems are easily and frequently damaged by the slightest bit of moisture in the brake fluid.
From the factory (where conditions are more easily controlled) most seem to go 3 years then every 2 after that.

Brake fluid is indeed scheduled to be replaced every two years: Mazda MX-5 Web Owners Manual - Scheduled Maintenance

Hi.
Just checked the service printout they gave at last service. Indeed the brake fluid is shown as being done at the 2 and 4 year service, so might tackle that when weather picks up, as l ain’t got the luxury of a garage.
According to the service schedule linked above the manual transmission oil should’ve have been replaced at last service but no evidence of this being done on the receipt etc.
Also seen on line Mazda engine oil for the skyactive engine. Is this a special blend of 5w40 or will any do,like as above, Mobil 1. ?

Mazda oil is 0W/20

Have a look here MX-5_8EV5-EE-15E_Edition1.indb (mazda.media) Page 537 (9-5)

S G Petch use this 7X 1 L CASTROL EDGE PROFESSIONAL FST™ C1 5W-30 OIL FORD WSS-M2C934-B | eBay you will see that it is the Ford specification.

The diff oil appears to be very specific for the ND as an alternative is NOT given, so for ‘comfort’ I use the Mazda SG1 oil.

Rodders of Sheffield has is own blends for gear box and diff oil but I think you have to let him change them. If he has started selling them for DIY then please shout up.

Have fun.

Just to add that there is a school of thought that says you should replace the diff oil on a regular basis. For the sake of £20 and a bit of time it is well worth considering. (the diff is easy to get to even when on the floor)
The other point is that the diff is more than likely to be short filled so topping up to the filler level is worth wile. Both my cars were and a friends too.
