Had my Mk 4 a few months after having Mk3.5 all good until out driving at night and being flashed by almost every car coming towards me even a pedestrian shouted you have your main beam on
To be fair the lights do look high and seems too make no difference with Adaptive lights on or off anybody had similar or am I missing the obvious ?
My model of MX-5 is: Mk 4
I’m based near: __Derbyshire
I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Adaptive lighting
Hi
I never had a car with adaptive lighting before my ND. I find it works wonders although I have seldom the opportunity to use it as you need to be driving at night outside urban areas.
I have no idea why it’s not working for you. This must be a useless post, sorry
Just to check, your car is equipped with HBC/ALH isn’t it? Do you know how it works, i.e. the position of the lighting switch and not turned off in MZD Connect, which warning lights should be illuminated? I’ve had many Mazda’s with these systems and find that they work flawlessly.
Our 6 estate has this and the beam icon has an A in it to show adaptive is on. Assuming you are talking about the technology that auto dips your beam for oncoming traffic (HBC). If you just have AFS which is adaptive lights these just adjust based on the road conditions and don’t control the beam.
Our 30AE and a friends experienced the same ‘flashing’ issue. If you are confident that you are using the system correctly, as we were, than you can adjust the level of both headlamps very easily.
This Manual pages - MX5 Manual | Mazda MX5 (Mk4) 2015+ explains all you need to know. So as not to overcomplicate things just park a few feet from a wall or garage door, turn on the lights and then ‘twiddle’ the adjusters to lower the beams so they are lower and even. If you are still getting flashed drop them a little more until you achieve your objective. It is not difficult and only takes minutes once you have found the adjusters and how they work.
I sometimes get flashed, i think its because only some of the main beam is lowered/adapted when an oncoming car is present.
Ive also had it when following a car with poor lighting, as my cars lights only dipped the bits in the middle they must have assumed their lights suddenly got better and kept turning their main beam on and off to see what was going on. They were surrounded by my light was the reason, but can’t really tell them that while driving behind them.
Thanks for the replies I have spent some time trying to confirm what the car has or should do
It does have an adaptive light button to activate within the lighting menu what did not happen was the Green adaptive light was not on ?
The car does have the front camera and the area is clean and there are no warning errors
Not sure if I should adjust the lights lower as per last post
I would not do any adjustments until you have made sure that the system is set to be ‘active’ and is working.
There is an on line manual available from the Mazda UK site that will tell you how to manage the system.
Hmm, my Mazda3 only has auto-load-levelling and I need to operate dip switch as usual.
To begin with from new we were being flashed all the time even though I knew it was dipped!
I took it back to the dealer, and they showed me it was set exactly as specified, and adding three beefy mechanics in the back it adjusted itself correctly.
I checked it again when home and set the beam down a little bit with the adjusters on the back of the headlights, not much, but closer to traditional. Now we are very rarely flashed. And the MOTs are passed, no problem.
The ND has similar adjusters to this, just not so accessible.
So Mazda assist set up a garage visit to check out the problem on checking the lights they were set far higher than required and they seem to think that the Adaptive icon should come on when set as per the control panel
If somebody can verify that is what happens or not please. Car booked for further investigation maybe forward camera issue or update / reboot of software lol
From memory, the adaptive light should come on with the light switch in the Auto position and the stalk pushed forward when light conditions are met (dark enough, no street lights etc).
Just to confirm there are 3 types of light systems. AFS, Adaptive Front Light System. This changes the beam direction during cornering. HBC, High Beam Control. This automatically dips the headlamps from High beam to low beam to prevent dazzling other drivers. ALH, Adaptive LED Headlamps. This adapts the throw of the head lamp beams to optimize light output but without dazzling other drivers.
Hi RR To be fair the tech had no idea really about adaptive lighting or the icon even though it shows in the manual. I am off up mainland at the moment so fair enough I will try later to see if the icon works
