ND - Boot Popper

A few people have bought and installed these - they take minutes to fit and open the boot fully when the boot open button or keyfob is pressed.

I purchased the MX5Things Boot Lid Popper from their UK distributor on Tuesday and they arrived today. I have put this off for ages as they at £99 and, in my opinion, a bit of a luxury mod. However, as we are going to be out-and-about more this year, the boot will get used more often!

No instructions, but hardly a taxing modification

There is one screw per side to tighten, so hard to muck it up. Took less than 5 minutes to fit both, including the walk to the shed for a screwdriver.

An “Action Shot”. . . . . . .

That’s a nice touch…but £99 for basically two springs !!!

I presume that there was nothing in the fitting that was “destructive” to the car? Therefore you could take them off again and have no evidence that they had been there? I go in my boot most days when going to work and as there is no obvious lip, you have to put your finger under the edge by the light and i can see that it will eventually get damaged. Therefore I would get some of these if it could be reversed (the car is brand new and I do not want to cause an issue). I presume from your comment about tightening a screw that there is a hole for it already?

The fitting instruction appear to be available here.

I wouldn’t mind some for my NC, but probably not at £99.

Looks simple - I will give it a go! Thanks guys…

I am very tempted too.
If you unlock the boot with the button, is there a risk it will pop up and hit you under your chain .
Have you noticed any difference when closing the boot. Righty or wrongly I swing mine shut rather than pushing it shut with a hand on the bodywork.

Sorry for the delay - it’s one screw to be inserted through an existing hole and that’s it. No bodywork is modified or damaged. They can be attached or detached within 5 minutes and you would leave no trace.

the boot needs a firmer shut to overcome the springs, but after 4 or 5 attempts it becomes the new muscle memory. If you have your head over the boot lid when you press the button by the number plate, it may hit you - but unless you were brain damaged, you would only do it once (wouldn’t you??)

£99 IS expensive, but it’s a vanity mod - you will be opening your boot even when you don’t have to!

I have ordered a set . Expensive, well they are a lot cheaper than the auto tailgate we added to the Ford Puma, although that does auto close too :disappointed:

Maybe @Roadie could knock up a similar design at a more reasonable price point???

I have auto boot closure on the ND - it goes . . . .

“shut the boot before you get in, luv”

These are USD99 in USA, so £71. Factor in post and import costs then that makes it more expensive.

Like a lot of “stuff” in EUR or USA, it seems a straight 1:1 conversion rate is used more often than not.

The early model of this device was 3D printed but there were quite a few failures as the springs have to be quite powerful and these are a much later version that, hopefully, will be more robust.

That looks a bit too like proper engineering for me to tackle. :scream:

There’s a guy on the Ducati forum who sells excellent starting circuit cable kits that are less resistant and higher quality than oem. He doesn’t make them himself, he farms out the manufacturing to a company that specialise in cables for the railway industry.

This is the link if anyone is interested…

I wouldn’t really know where to start with the design and specification of components. Spring material and strength would be an unknown and I don’t have the facilities for prototyping anything like that. It would be possible to buy a set and then ask an engineering company to make copies but that would be wrong on both legal and moral grounds.

My wind blocker and LED boot strips are to my own design. While I have researched similar products in both cases I haven’t physically examined or measured any of them. I have designed them myself with measurements and prototyping done on the car.

Fair enough.
Maybe if we wait a little while, something similar will appear on AliBaba

That’s where I’m getting the sequential indicators.

yep had mine on for around 8 months no problems find the lid still fly’s up very quick but with the new spoiler going on it will be a little more of a graceful action once activated

I think that for a couple of tanks of fuel that’s a price worth paying! How does it work using the key fob?

A press on the boot open button from 10 or 15 feet away and it pops open, in my vid I was standing about 10 feet away and pressed the boot open button on the fob whilst videoing.
