new clutch fitted, now noise sounds like diff on deceleration

 hi

had a new clutch fitted and i have a noise (whinning) when warm sounds like the diff and not the gearbox , i have read somewhere that the power plant frame may need loosening off jack gearbox slightly and retighten

anyone else experienced this after a new clutch has been fitted , when you decelerate on overrun in 3rd you can hear, it then tickle the throttle and it disappears until overun again

cheers rog

Was it a genunie Mazda clutch? I’ve know similar symptoms from cars that have non genuine clutches fitted. I have no evidence but I think it comes down to the weight of the clutch being different (lighter) and this causes gear backlash noise. Just my opinion.

It’s worth checking the PPF height.

I chased this one for about 5 years, 2 gearboxes a clutch always new spiggot bearings and release bearings and all done by me.I jacked the ppf and lubed the prop shaft joints etc etc etc. The noise finally disappeared when I had a new heavy duty [description on the box] clutch fitted after my SC instal, another new spiggot bearing and a skim of the flywheel and all the noise has gone…as our friends across the pond say…go figure

 hi

it was a exedey clutch from mx5 parts supposed to be close to oem.

where can i find a diagram or details on the ppf height so i can go back with it in my hand to get garage to try adjustment

cheers rog

Looking in the workshop manual it just says “support the transmission so that it is level” then tighten the PPF bolts. I have seen a measurement somewhere, I’ll have a look and see if I can find it.

Edit.

Found it already, it in the NB (1998 MK2) supplement though and says the lower surface of the PPF should be 60.0 - 72.0mm above the lower edge of the chassis rails, refered to as distance A. It says to measure it with “a straightedge and vernier calipers”.

Hi buddy, I have recently had a new clutch, release bearing, spigot and slave cylinder fitted after the rear engine seal blown and needed replacing but when I received the car back it had exactly the same noise.

sounded like a supercharger when letting off the throttleStick Tongue Out

I have seemed to have cured it by replacing the gearbox and diff oil -along with the gear shift boots for good measure.

May just be coincidence, or that the clutch has ‘burnt off’ something while I have been using it.

What I have noticed though, is although my shifting is unbelievably smooth now, the ‘shift lever’ sits slightly tilted to the right, may just be me imaging things though.

cheers robbie found some helpful guys on miata which had the drawings in garage next week for them to sort and mot it hopefully !

hi largey yep hows your missfire now all gone ? im pretty sure its the ppf adjustment everything points to it and the miata boys have had the same problem , just worried it was something to do with the clutch i had just paid to have fitted !

you names largey not related to phil or trevor large in yate are u ?

cheers rog

HAHAHA

Yup, I’m Phil’s son and Trevor is my UncleEmbarassed

And I’ll have to check this Ppf thing then, but I am glad to report the car has been completely restored to full working order by a genius mechanic at Autolink - It was a hell of a drive, but everything got sorted it the one day.

Could you possibly link me to the drawings so I can go back and get them to check the allignment? I’m hoping that it wouldn’t have caused any damage.

Thanks, Aran

bloody ell i used to live in the next road to your dad and went to school with him small world eh !

glad your sorted i hear autolink are very good in a way i wish i had gone there for the clutch as our friends live they way but also driving that far with a slipping clutch would make for a nasty drive !

i have the drawings as a pdf i will see if i can paste to here now if not i will email if you pm me

cheers rog

 hi aran

heres the link , the yanks are really helpful guys there are some cars on there with incredible mileages so they know what goes on them and how to sort it !

I brought this same clutch unit thinking it would be top notch but have the very same noise as you describe, sounds like a bag of nails on overrun, goes if you feather the throttle, and as you say only once warmed up, i did replace the gearbox at the same time so suspected this, but pretty sure it is the clutch and your experiance more or less confirms, anoying as genuine clutch same price as exedey.

Would be very intrested if you do manage to cure it by adjusting the power frame though.

Ken

Update for you, while having my geometry alignment done I asked if he could check out the gearbox position with the diagrams you linked me to.

It was out on one join, but he couldn’t measure from a strait edge as my chassis rails are very, very bentRolling eyes

He also said it may be the clutch itself or the release bearing.

I’m guessing clutch, and will be onto the phone to exedy when I get back from my trip as it’s not exactly a nice noise to have when I do eventually come to sell the car.

Off to Nurburgring I go!Big Smile Byeeee

 hi ken

my local garage say they adjusted it to the spec i gave them but its still there !

either they have not adjusted correctly ,could be slighty out or as aran says i think its the fecking exedy clutch , seems to be very common on the miata site.

i have had mine for 8 years and a change is on the cards, i quite fancy a elise while i am fit enough to get in and out of one, shame really just not enough power i my still keep it thou but it will have to stay outside then its still got the black paint on the suspension arms with hardly any rust on them which im sure will start to deteriate pretty quick then!

cheers rog

Hi Rog

Yes my power frame is in the middle of tolerance so 99.99% confirms the clutch, very annoying, good luck with any change of car

Ken

 cheers ken

a guy on miata reckons the springs in the clutch are not tight as original and rattle like a tamborine when you shake it ! im thinking that if yours is 99.9% correct its got to be the bloody clutch, its not exactly a easy item to replace or cheap if you have to pay someone pretty piss poor manufacturing tbh.

at the end of it is a noise that wont knacker the car but does not help when come to selling as a prospective purchaser would think the diff is on its way out as i would !

goodluck mate let me know if you come up with anything else, i think aran is going to persue exedy to see what they have to say

cheers rog

That’s refered to as clutch thrash, does light clutch pressure stop the noise?

yup, depressing the clutch gets rid of the noise.

Imagine the racket it is making when thrashing my car round the nurburgring {#emotions_dlg.indif}

It’s very upsetting as it was stated ‘oem’ quality, which clearly it isn’t.

Not fully depressing it, just light pressure to pre-load the spring.

The noise will go away when you get it to ‘bite’

It’s a really bad noise when driving around in normal conditions, but at the 'ring…

People were probably looking at it like it was about to explode all over the track…
