also just been quoted £30+ cheaper than other renewal quotes (1999 NB) with unlimited mileage (previously limited to 3000 per year) inc. breakdown etc.
Just a follow on note for anyone thinking of moving over to them - if the odd track day is important to you (I only do the OC run events) then unfortunately Peter James can’t offer you cover for this element and it’s restrictively expensive to get it on its own.
Otherwise their customer service and provided quote was incredibly good!
After a very pleasant and professional phone call with Natalie at Peter James I have taken advantage of their keen pricing and renewed my insurance with them.
Their quote was £60 cheaper than the renewal reminder.
I shan’t name the old company here but if you’re interested send me a DM.
What sort of mods have you got covered? I have a BBR Super 200 conversion with brakes and suspension changes. If PJ will cover that, I’ll try calling when my renewal is due.
Does Peter James just specialise in more club and specialist oriented insurance or can they do a multicar type policy? Recently renewed with aplan/howdens and policies did go up slightly over last year, not enough to start ringing around, but if this is an alternative for an mx5 and 2 daily drivers I’d certainly check them out next time
thanks or this tip, I have just received a ridiculous quote for my renewal, I don’t understand why there has been such a jump in insurance this year. Any money off is better than nothing!
We have used Peter James for many years and can’t fault them, we currently have a multi car policy with them for a BMW 428i and a Triumph Spitfire. Their quote for both cars was cheaper than any online quote for the BMW alone!
We are also about to take a out a separate fully comp policy with them for the MX5 for just £151, this does require that we have an MX5 owners club membership, so that needs to be taken into account but it is still less than half the price of any online quote
I see no one has really mentioned their NCD, age and driving experience. I think I might be a good example of how great the savings are:
Age 31 at time of policy
2 years driving experience
2 years NCD
No claims or anything, squeeky clean
Last years insurance on a 2000 NB through Admiral was £500~ or so. Renewal was £800-950 depending on the provider.
Peter James done got me fully covered with all the extras listed on their website for £190. I added a second MX-5 to the policy, a 2014 NC for £180. In total that’s £370 for 2 cars which is a ridiculous deal compared to the other providers.
Now the downsides.
Firstly, before I added the NC to the policy I had unlimited mileage on the NB, now I have 6000 miles per year between the 2 cars. So this may be a problem for people, fortunately I have a 3rd car as a daily.
Secondly, no track day insurance at all. They simply will not cover it and no amount of “escalate to a senior” type chat will make a difference. Fortunately enough for me, I kinda don’t care. My NC most likely won’t be going on track and the NB can eat as many stone chips as it wants.
I think the main criteria for my cheap policy is age, I’m outside the 18-25 insurance group and sitting in the sweet spot (ages 31-65). So your mileage may vary.
It’s not really a downside however it is worth noting;
You do not accumulate a no claims bonus with this policy. Any NCB you bring to the policy is parked and given back to you at the end of the period.
I think though for a lot of people the benefits probably outweigh any perceived disadvantages, insurance is however always linked to individual circumstances so it may not work for everyone.
Overall this is a very competitive product linked to being a member of the Club.
Ah yes I forgot to mention the NCB being parked. With the rising prices of insurance I’m of the firm belief it doesn’t matter anyway. On a £800 policy you are probably saving less than the cost of a take away when you pop in your NCB.
I also left my individual circumstances out, as I didn’t feel it was worth mentioning my marital status, house status and occupation. I’m not sure what difference these make, but I can’t imagine much.
Sorry to not have mentioned mine before, but I have 12 years of NCD, which make it even more crazy.
You’re right. NCD does nothing to your price except tell the insurers when to hike your renewals when you lose it.
Note: Insuring my wife who has no NCD, Vs insuring me? The change in premiums on Go compare was within 2%. In her favour… I’ve been driving for 18 years and she’s been driving for 8.
I’m ringing around at the moment as both our cars are on Multicar.
Me 45 yo 16 years NCB, No points etc. parked on drive. Modified slightly with Lowering springs.
Wife 47 10 years NCB, No points. Problem she/we have had to make two claims. Car stolen from Drive last year, and 22’ she wrote her Fiesta off.
So one her fault and the other a thieving scumbag. It’s a real problem in our area at the moment (just outside brum)
We are being hit heavily this year it’s gone up from £503 to £650. Footman didn’t beat this price.
Out of curiosity, how much is the wifes past affecting the price? I would be interested in seeing 2 quotes without multicar to see just how much they are slapping on for the 2 claims. I’m assuming £400~.
