So after long and frustrating day engine was finally out and fyi I took it through the top not dropping down as manuals suggests still not sure what would be best approach.
So let’s narrow down to findings.
After disconnecting gearbox I found that:
Clutch bearing is done it’s life
Clutch disk is almost done too it was just a matter of time.
Now to the best part. Took off oil sump and found some metal chips in it as expected when you have rod knock.
So checked very first rod and there you are play all the ways.
Took bearing out and it was left nearly 1mm thickness of it. Seem that oil passage was dry possible blocked and bearing was spinning rounds hence damaged crankshaft.
So now I have few options here either:
Refurbish it £???
Buy refurbished one approx £150
Buy new one approx £250
Or… Replace whole engine of course 2.5 would sound better:) but engines comes around £1200 at least.
If there is anyone you know in Lincolnshire who could inspect and if needed refurbish my crankshaft I woul very appreciate that.
I’m more DIY man so decided to rebuild engine my self therefore today i went to Cambridge
Rebores Ltd and left my crankshaft for inspection.
Will wait till next week for news so till then i have plenty time to wash parts.
Remove rusts and repaint some of the parts to make more like out from factor.
Back to Prime Glory!
If it’s knocked a big end out make sure you check the rod for ovality.
Also personally I don’t grind cranks but opt to replace due to big end bearing not having any location pegs and the shell been the weak point
Well yes it was messed up well on the first cylinder big end bearing was running on 0 oil so it was spined around scuffing rod oll around it. When I checked bearing it was nearly 1mm thickness.
Because rod has been damaged ill have to replace all 4 of them. Not good option but it is what it is.
I’m not very proficient in engine rebuild but as long as my work can be done by manual suggested measures I think I will be ok.
Also I couldn’t resist to prep few parts for painting. I was thinking about yellow same as gonna be callipers. But for now only this much I have to share.
Any suggestions what to do with oxidised outside cover ? How to get to nice aluminium shiny colour?
Do you just paint over or trying to polish the surface? Any ideas are welcome.
When I rebuilt Ducati engines. I used to rebuilt the whole empty shell and have it sandblasted. Not hugely expensive and looked new again after 25-30 years. Very satisfying.
Yeah I had this thought but don’t have an equipment for sand blast.
And to take to others and pay money I have trust issues:)
Usually I end up disappointed and have to do it my way.
Also everything comes back to the price. Want to keep as low cost as possible.
Maybe someone knows how they do charge for sandblasting? What’s most common formula to price the job?
On top of that.
I took Beryl advice. Thanks for that but it went out slightly different than expected.
2. Engine case and gearbox arrived from sandblasting.
As well as some chassis cross members.
I thought parts will look more polished but now they look more like primed.
I guess now I gonna have to paint them otherwise all the dirt will stick like crazy to parts.
I painted the calipers in my Niseko with VHT enamel “Pontiac Blue,” almost a match in colour.
It’s harder to find now but immune to oil, brake fluid, heat etc, re-coat lightly a couple of times ten minutes apart and then cure overnight, hot oven isn’t strictly necessary.
I was looking what most people use for engine paint and these enamel paint is very common so I guess I’ll be using it as well.
Just what’s left to do is pick some colours.
For an engine I think gun metal grey
Gearbox maybe silver.
And for chassis I think to use e-tech chassis paint.
