North Yorkshire impulse buy MX-5 RF Sport Nav

Hi all, last Wednesday 4pm no thoughts whatsoever about buying an MX5, sat at the dinner table I casually said maybe we could do with a ‘cheap’ second car due to my wife looking after seriously ill father and having to leave me without transport for a lot of the week.
One of my clients has a car dealership, that I manage, so she had a quick Look, her eyes lit up when she saw a white a MX-5 RF Sport Nav and said “that’s gorgeous” .
I didn’t take any convincing it would be a ‘fun’ runaround for me while she’s out and about. Next day at 4pm we had test driven and after a ‘staff’ discount signed off on the car.
When the kids were young I had a Westfield for a few years and a Mazda RX8 and after that put pleasure driving on the back burner for 20 years and cycled a lot, now I have a to more time on my hands and looking forward to blasts across the Dales, Moors, Northumberland and Lake District.
I will have a lot of questions to ask in the coming days, weeks, months and look forward to being part of the community

Hi Alan,

Welcome to the Forum. Only been here a few days myself.

Hope you enjoy the RF. Looks to be in lovely condition.

All the best
Gordon.

Thanks Gordon, trying to find your posts to see what you’re driving
cheers Al

Just a quick addition to this, whilst driving the RF I was struck by the ‘similarity’ of the drive/feel to a Lotus Elise late 1990’s although a lot quieter inside than the Elise. I was very pleasantly surprised as to how ‘sporty’ it felt compared to my RX8 and an MX5 I had on a month long hire mid 90s.

I really should try an ND. You have some pedigree driving in your history so quite surprised you were reserved about the RX8/ MX5 Mk1 in your opinion.
I bought a humble 1.8 NC1 just to test the waters: crude/ tactile and a huge bag of fun for 3kish. It’s coming down to what I get for a huge extra wedge…. Thanks for that👍

Where abouts in ( not so )sunny Yorkshire are you guys ??

Hi Alan,

Welcome to the white RF Club, only had mine for a month or so, I’ll keep my eyes open for yours while I’m out and about in North Yorkshire to!

Hi Beryl, with the RX8 I had just come from a 2.0 zetec Westfield with aero screen, which I loved but totally impractical. My driving style then was a lot more exuberant and anti-social on lotus 7 club runs and a couple of spins on track days (which you’d expect  ) but when it happened on the road I thought probably best stop now, anyway the RX8 was a big jump in sophistication and comfort and I didn’t really take to it. The Hire MX5 I used seemed a bit underpowered if I’m honest, but to be fair it was mainly commuting. I built a reasonably high end Sim Rig a year ago and have done some online racing Mazda Global Challenge iracing which has renewed my driving passion and probably played a part in my impulse buy
