OE Yokohama tyres

  1. My model of MX-5 is: ND1 2017
  2. I’m based near: _Dublin
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Tyres

My OE tyres are showing small cracks on the edge between sidewall and tread. These are quite small but all around three of the four tyres. They are Yokahama Advan Sport 16 inch 195/50 R16 84V…

Now one of the comments on the Yokahama tyres gave exactly the same problem after 2 years, so not impressed. Any suggestions as to decent tyres?

Hi.I have just had the same dilemma.original tyres still on my nd 1.5. 25000 miles.looked at all options and in the end fitted advan sports again.had them on my Elise and never had a problem.to be honest there aren’t that many to choose from on the 16’’ rims.

I binned my 16” Yokohamas based on cracking and put Hankook Ventus Prime 3 on, happy with them.

If you’re happy to go up a size to 205/50 R16 then Michelin quietly released their Pilot Sport 5 tyre in that size recently.

Uniroyal Rainsport 5 195/50 R16 88V XL are also a good option for ND 1.5L. But I don’t think you can really beat the Advan Sports in 16 inch. for the ND 1.5.

Have you spotted any tyre dealers/retailers who have these in stock?

There isn’t many at the moment:

National doesn’t seem to quote prices without fitting.

Personally I wouldn’t order from mytyres.co.uk due to their reviews :face_with_peeking_eye:

Yep, will ignore MyTyres!

Just hadn’t seen any appear on Blackcircles yet and they’re not worth the £175 cost from National, in my view.

Just in case you’ve missed it, National’s website is offering 20% off for 4 tyres which is £140.79 fitted each.

I appreciate that we’re just approaching spring time but I’m planning ahead, are there any winter tyre recommendations that I should consider? 2.0 Sport Nav fitted with Bridgestone (Originals)from the previous owner. I live in the countryside and generally use my motorbike for commuting but not in really harsh conditions, that’s when I’ll use the ND. I’ve always fitted Michelin Cross Climates which I rate very highly, to my previous vehicles. I’m interested in your thoughts.

I use the Kumho Solus 4S during the autumn/winter, on a separate set of wheels. They make a noticeable difference as you’d hope and have dealt well with any snow and ice conditions.

Of course, you’ll not go wrong with CrossClimates either. I also used Goodyear’s Vector AllSeason on my previous NC2 - also recommended.

Thanks for the information, I’ll check those out.

Replaced mine like-for like after 6 years. No sign of cracking. But it’s spent most of its life under cover. Standing, in the sun. isn’t good.

I say like-for-like…the new ones were actually 84W and they are marked “OE”. What else they could be OE for I don’t know - an Elise possibly?

Correct, the Elise uses the 84W variant for its OE (Original Equipment) application. It’s the 84V version that’s OE fitment for the ND.

I’ve ordered Yokohama tyres - hopefully they work out OK.

Yokohama :+1:

I had the new tyres fitted today.
The old tyres were worse than Im thought. One tyre had a split about 1 cm above the rim around the whole tyre. Also one tyre had a screw in the tread through the tyre but still maintaining pressure.
Anyway, new tyres are now fitted and car is driving well.
