Overheating issues on 1.6 NB

Water pump?

I’ve just replaced that, when I took the thermostat housing off and ran the engine, water poured out from the housing. I’m assuming this means the pump is working fine?

I’m getting no water coming from the radiator top hose though so it doesn’t seem to be making its way through the cylinder head

If the thermostat has been fitted upside down, it would cause the issues described. Have you checked it?

(Needs to be spring side down)

There’s no thermostat in it at the moment

Sounds weird. Even if water galleries in head are gumming up it’s not usual for them to block completely. Did you say you’ve had the head off ? Is it possible you’ve put gasket in the wrong way round ?

Yea I’ve had the head off to change the water pump and head gasket. Gasket definitely went in the right way round, although I did just have to check my pictures as I was doubting myself! When I took the thermostat housing off it was almost completely blocked up, the temp sensor was buried in hardened crud so I swapped the housing too.

Do you know which holes are the water galleries btw?

The main coolant flow is through the block; any flow through the head is in parallel with this.

  1. No thermostat probably means that somebody has tried to solve this problem before…

  2. Given the reported state of the thermostat housing, the inlet elbow bolted to the water pump could be in the same condition. That would block / severely restrict coolant flow.
