Peter James Insurance Renewal

About this time last year I sang the praises of MX5OC’s new link up with Peter James Insurance. I managed to get a good deal, however, I have just received my renewal only to find that my (sub £200) policy has jumped up by £40. I might just get some comparisons! Does seem like a big hike!

Record £11.7bn paid out on motor insurance claims

Motor insurers paid out a record £11.7bn in car insurance claims in 2024, with the average cost of cover met by drivers rising by £78 annually, according to data from the Association of British Insurers.

The body said rising theft and repair costs are continuing to have an impact on premiums. The average cost of motor cover across 2024 was £622 – 15pc higher than 2023.

There have, however, been signs of a downward trend to costs in recent months. The average price for cover in the final quarter of last year was 2pc, or £14, lower than at the start of the year.

The typical cost paid for cover in the final quarter of last year was £621, down from £635 in the first quarter of 2024.

Good luck in getting comparison quotes, let us know how you get on as we all will probably experience this.

Jeff - Thanks for the reply - and I’m sure that is a highly accurate summary of a high level view of motor insurance in this country. However, a 23% hike in my insurance policy still seems out of kilter with your figures. I have max no claims and have a 3k miles policy on a car valued at £3k.
Best wishes

If you can’t find a better price for your cover (compare sites) then grab it, it’s not a massive hike in price which is always expected these days.

Hi blanketboy

I note your comments and my post was to simply show that the book of car insurance paid out substantial claims (as it should do, that’s the point of insurance) and that may affect “overall” renewals and not one particular policy.

In fact, I’m expecting to pay more myself next policy year with Peter James as I had an extremely competitive price last year; 1993 Eunos, Agreed Value, Full Comp, breakdown cover, their fee and IPT at under £170 for the year. No mileage limit but it’s a sunny day car and laid up for a few months when there is salt on the roads. However, personal circumstances rarely are taken into consideration when negotiating policies.

Again, good luck on your search… :crossed_fingers:

Just had my renewal with Peter James and it’s gone up £5 for my 94 Eunos so I just paid it.

Prices are down, apparently…

It can be difficult to easily find out exactly what you are buying, when shopping for motor insurance. Not all policies are the same, and a much cheaper quote may reflect the fact that the benefits that particular policy offers, should you need to claim on it, are not as extensive.
A “good” policy with a reputable company at a “good” price and featuring any particular items you may require, might be the best approach?
I find it a bit of a minefield- but always best to phone the broker or insurance company to discuss. An on-line quote, in my experience can be more expensive as it’s much more “general” and not as tailored to you or your circumstances.
You can talk to a human . Generally.

I joined up last February when my old policy expired and was offered a great price for me (£357, previous was around £450). In October another classic policy I had on my 1991 Mazda 323F came to a close so I decided to ask PJI if they’d take that on as well, and they’ve given me all the club benefits on that policy too, all they wanted was £35 for the remaining 4 months before my MX5 policy renewed and a £20 change fee. Renewal for both came in in February now paying £375 for both cars for the whole year, where previously having a policy each through the same broker (Grove&Dean) was paying nearly £700 (And I used to think that was good )

Hi.
Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you wish.

Like blanketboy I too joined Peter James last year but will not renew. A not too unreasonable price hike, £267.63 to £285.21, got me looking around. My former insurer LV came in at £275.16 but will go with Saga at £237.51. I found cheaper options eg Shiela’s Wheels at under £200 but rubbish customer services basically a bot puts me off. Peter James’s policy was Agreed Value Classic Car type with no No Claims Discount available. Interestingly LV is cheaper this year than renewal last year. So point made elsewhere above re lower cost policies this year could be true or is it that thing of new customers getting better deals, umm. I might add that excesses with Saga are better (lower) eg replacement windscreen £75. I suppose the the old adage is, it pays to shop around and that loyalty in my case with LV counts for nothing.
Next up, tomorrow (1st March) try to tax my SORNED Mk3.5 PRHT with MOT renewal later in March, I’ve heard that there has to be a clear month between the two dates. Happy days.

David, you are incorrect on the NCD point, that was all changed this year, please see the Club Mag articles for info or here on the forum

Did you phone them to see if they would do anything?

Do all these other policies offer you the benefits that the Club Policy does?

I’ve seen similar assessments from other sites too. Comparisons are always worthwhile IMHO.

Iain’F must be be right regarding NCB, I probably read about it but frankly come renewal if that’s now included it should be stated on renewal documentation. There are references to “other policy excess’” and to “ the Specialist vehicle IPID for changes to your windscreen excess”. Way too obscure, just give me the numbers. Look I know it’s a Club partner and they were ok for me last year and I may return to Peter James but now their quote and doesn’t cut it for me.

It’s insurance, I get it.

I just wanted to know if you called and that they couldn’t help further? and if what you get was comparable at least I terms of breakdown, parts cover etc to try to see if the modest difference in price versus the included extras is considered - or is it just case to pay less?

The scheme continues to evolve from member feedback, your above points have been received by the team.

Renewed my NA car insurance with Peter James after a 3% increase…

Tried to get a quote for my car. Wife being the owner and registered keeper. GDPR means that she has to get a quote. She cant during the working day and PJ dont open on a Saturday. Bit awkward that one. Eventually got a quote and was twice as much as we currently pay . So, not sure where their figures for us came from. Just tried on line with Adrian Flux. Total faff for mods. Didnt like me putting in answers for valuation of mods. Cant just put in a BBR 190 conversion, wont let you. The joys of insurance. Luckily I live across the road from Aplan and guess I will pop and see them next weekend as insurance is due early next month. Not been a good solution for us.
