OK, back out to car, reconnected battery, unfortunately hasn’t made any difference to the fault So, following Richards suggestion, I’ve had the two plugs off the roof module and blasted them with contact cleaner. Unfortunately, again, it hasn’t improved things. I tried to get a good look at the two micro switches on the drivers side with the deck lid up, difficult to see properly but the top one (which must switch when deck lid is closed) is free to move as there’s no contact at this point. I mentioned previously (I think) that when I touched the top micro switch, it extinguished the close switch red light so that appears to work. The bottom one (sensing when deck lid is fully open) is in contact with a pin on the gear wheel so is shut so to speak and is in line with the other one and the pin, so hopefully that’s not the issue? With the cover off the roof module, it’s that I can hear as mentioned previously, thought it was a relay.
Hi Andy, it’s hard keeping track of it all! Checked out the window switch again, when the close switch is activated and the Windows drop, the three little lights on both switches go out, when the close switch is released the lights come in again. I think that’s correct. All Windows function perfectly. See my previous post about the micros etches too. Many thanks
I’ve had a look on mellens, it was like a course on Egyptology to me hieroglyphics springs to mind I’m absolutely hopeless with stuff like that and didn’t really grasp it. I guess someone “in the know” would make short work of it
Okay, my next guess would be there is a switch/sensor that detects when the rear deck is in the fully open position and this isn’t being operated and hence the roof is inhibited. I’ll have a look when I get home.

I still suspect the lower micro switch, try and compare the click noise made by the two switches when the arm operates them.
I have just tried on my phrt and if you start the deck closing and turn off the ignition after it begins to move you will be able to push the micro switch arms with a long thin screwdriver.
If you can hear them both (I tried it in my garage) then that at least indicates that the lower switch is not jammed!
Surely there is some mechanical part, such as a cog or hinge, that moves when the roof closes.
Closing it manually should confirm that nothing has been dislodged and is now jamming the mechanism, thus pointing to an electrical issue such as a micro switch?

So, I’ve not given up in it obviously, however, I’ve used the genuine Mazda string and associated bits to put the roof up into the closed position. The string is supposed to pull the locking pin into position for the rear deck. Try as I might I just cannot figure that bit out anyway lids on and apart from some Devine intervention, I might have to ring Mazda and book car in for diagnostics at least. I am so unhappy about this, it’s really getting to me. Oh well, what do they say? The joys of motoring! I’m knackered now after all this going for a bath and a soak!
I got this info ( fuse nos. 24 and 25 ) from the Haynes manual . As you say, it differs from the Mazda hand book; sorry if I`ve added to the goose-chase.
Barrie, I know you do not have the smart module fitted, but the last owner may have. Therefore I would go behind the passanger seat pull cover off and check that the connecter is seated correctly. Why I say this is when I fitted my smart module after a week I had to remove for software update and thinking I had pushed both ends of the connector together fully… of I went. Next day took car out and roof went down ok, but not up same as yours. Checked connectors push-pull-push and bingo all ok.
I have had the smart module fitted now for 3 years and so far so good.
Thanks John, following on from another reply I did disconnect, spray contact leaner and reconnect the two plugs to the roof module, unfortunately it hadn’t made any difference I have read about issues when installing those nest little gadgets though, so a good call and keep 'em coming!
