Rear camera when installing new stereo?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC2
  2. I’m based near: Derby
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on:

Hi all

In a few weeks I’m having a new Stereo with CarPlay fitted to my 2012 Kuro. The fitter has offered to fit a reversing camera for £85 - is this worth it seeing that my car doesn’t have sensors? Seems a bit strange to have a camera and no sensors ?
Anyone gone for this option ? Thanks

I used to think that reversing cameras were a bit silly until I got a car that had one and got used to relying on it to reverse.

I have since sold that car and got an NC2 and I must say, I kind of miss it. I don’t need it but it would be a nice to have and will likely install one when I replace the HU.

Put one in when I did mine and makes life easier.
I know it’s only a small car, but works for us.
No sensors by the way.
Because they are quite low it just saves dinging the exhaust tips on a kerb on my nice rear box.

Knowing how long it takes to to do it properly I’d say that was a good deal if it includes a decent camera.

Here’s what I did with my 25AE, hardwired all the way, no new holes drilled, and still with a watertight boot. This replaced the radio camera I’d fitted earlier and now uses the head unit instead of the satnav.

I fitted one on my NC, having got used to it I wouldn’t be without now. Have already fitted one to my daily driver too, that has sensors too. Invaluable if you are reversing on or off the drive with small children around and reversing into the garage as I do.

I’ve just got to figure out how to fit one to my ND, I think it’s hooking up to the screen could be problematic.

Thanks that was my other concern - do they drill holes ?

Thanks - I’ve had a car with a camera before but it also had sensors - just wondered what having a camera alone was like ?

That depends on where the camera is placed.

For an absence of any new holes in bodywork, the NC has an obvious spot; the blanking-plug between the number plate lights, these plugs are cheap and replaceable.

But getting a reverse light feed to the camera and getting the video out can be interesting. I spent some time working out possible solutions to fit my particular cars and their display options. Some displays are easy, alas others can be a pig or impossible.

No need to if they are doing it properly.
I fed the cable through existing holes/seals/grommets.

I definitely recommend fitting one. I’ve got one on my NC and wouldn’t be without it. I fitted my camera under the lip of the boot just above the number plate and fed the cable through a rubber grommet behind the bumper. Very easy job to do.

Did you drill any holes to mount it or just use adhesive ?

Camera is attached with double sided badge tape. I did have to modify the mounting bracket a bit to get it to point down.
I removed the grommet from inside of the boot, took the top bolts out of the bumper and dropped the cable down behind, no need to remove the bumper.

I checked with the fitter and he said he would have to drill a 5mm hole so now im not so sure whether to have a camera or not ?

Thanks and where did you mount the camera itself ?

Screwed and sticky pads onto the plastic blanking plate.
Cable routed as photo’s.:+1:
