VERY common issue with the rear hub bushings which Mazda know all about, there is even a Mazda bulletin for the issue now. Your best bet is buying replacement bushings from a guy called Andy Leslie on Facebook, better than replacing them with Mazda parts that will fail in the same way.

I had a very similar sounding problem on an old Mini R56 I used to have, over small rutts in the road it would knock, yet over bigger bumps it wouldn’t make a sound… After digging on forums, it turned out that the rear antiroll bar bushings were a common fault… I changed them for poly bushes and they were silent after that… May not be the issue for you but may be worth a punt

100% rear hub bushings, its quickly becoming the most common issue on MK4s now.

Cheers for the heads up Gar, my mk4 is on 31k now so I’ll keep my ears open for any knocks

If you are anywhere near Sheffield Paul Roddison (Motorsport) knows all about the issue and offers replacements too. Mazda will want to replace the whole hub upright each side at high cost.

I’d print this off and insist on a repair under warranty, its a known issue they should be sorting for you free of charge.

This post on Facebook is from someone in Central Scotland, not sure on what basis they do these, well worth a look though.

I could be wrong, but I know who that person is and i think they are fitting the Andy Leslie replacements (they are uprated bushings that he provides a removal tool with), but if the OP is under warranty he should 100% be expecting a replacement under warranty FoC.

Agreed.

Hi Guys

Thanks For All The Advice Manager At Parks Was Hopeless Guy I Spoke To Earlier Today At Parks said It Was Definitely Rear Hubs That Were Needing Replaced But When The Manager Phoned Me Later
He Said He Couldn’t Be Sure It Was The Hubs Apologised And Told Me To Take Car To Mazda Dealer

Print out the document I linked above, take it with you to the Mazda dealer, insist on replacements under warranty (FoC), any push back get straight on the phone to Mazda customer services and cause a stink.

Hi Gareth

Thanks Fir The Info But Car Wasn’t Bought From A Mazda Dealer Is The Guy Andy Leslie A Member If This Club

Cheers Gazza

Ah I see, in that case yeah your more than likely going to have problems getting it resolved under an extended / 3rd party warranty. Not that I know of, if you can join Facebook group ‘MX-5 MK4 ND owners UK’ (I’m an admin) he is on there. Otherwise, search Andy Leslie on facebook, he’s the one in Kingston upon Hull with the motorbike pic as his profile picture.

Hi Gareth

Do You Think It Could Just Be The Bushings That Need Replaced ? I’ve Sent Andy Leslie A Message So Thanks

Gazza

Yes it will be, Andy is definitely your best option trust me. He’ll provide uprated bushings with a tool for removing and replacing the originals. A Mazda dealer will insist on the whole uprights being replaced as they won’t be willing to just replace the effected bushes, IIRC you are talking several hundred each side at Mazda.

Hi Gareth

How many bushings are on either side of the rear hubs ??

Cheers Gazza

I believe its two each side that need replacing, but not 100% sure as mine is only on 19k and not needed them so far.

Heck, just checked out the cost of a MK4 rear hub
It looks like there a 5 bushings per hub. I hope it is just one or two of these that fail?
