Recently bought my first MX5 NC1

Hi All,

My name is Zac, I’m 19 and located in the Milton Keynes area. I have just recently bought myself a 2L NC1 (08) with the PRHT in Copper Red. Admittedly it’s my 3rd car in just over 1 year of passing my test but i love the MX5 so will be keeping this one for a while . So far the only mod I’ve done so far is to add the Jass Performance seat lowering brackets but I have also ordered a Cobra race type back box that shoukd arrive today. My favourite thing about the MX5 community at the moment is waving to/ getting waved to by other owners, always makes me grin . I’m sure I’ll be making more posts in the future but for now thanks for habing me and I’ve artatched a couple pic below.

Very nice car but I dread to think how much insurance you are paying! Fix the rust on the subframes before you do anything to the car

Thank you, and yes insurance was a bit steep :grimacing: was £2.6k but with changing the exhaust I had to change the insurance which weirdly brought it down to £1.5k so that was a win. It was fully rust proofed underneath before I bought it but I do plan on getting the bits of rust fixed when I’ve got some extra cash, thanks for the advise.

May you have many hours of trouble-free open-air motoring! Watch these cars in the wet, they can be a bit unpredictable. If you put older relatives as extra drivers it can bring the insurance premium down a bit

I love the car as it is the same model and colour as my previous MX-5 I p/x’d last year.

Strangely, according to the DVLA site, it was not retested or taxed this year, as the car was perfect. I was sad to see it go owing to the memories it provided, as mentioned in a separate post a couple of years ago.

I hope whoever bought it did not do anything silly with it…?

@Zac_Cullip Welcome!

What a fantastic car to be driving around in at 19 and exploring the world. With the roof down

Enjoy!

abit unpredictable… thats an understatement!

ok maybe i was seeing what happened when i turned the TC off which i found out it turns it off off not a soft off like most modern cars alas i entered a roundabout and gave a right bootfull of throttle and snap… i did a 360!

luckily it was at 5am with no ■■■■■■ else on the road and i didnt bend anything but now i know it snaps like that i am pretty carefull.

hi Zak and welcome to the mx way… which i too am new to, im currently just over 4 weeks in to ownership of my 09 2L and honestly wish i had got one alot sooner.

Check how old the tyres are.

The DOT code ends with four digits set in an oval giving week and year of manufacture

See the many threads about old tyres with “lots of tread”, eg Bridgestone Pootenza, going hard and lacking grip.

i know from what the seller said 2 of the tyres were brand new unsure on the older ones, i think they could well be sub par chinesium tyres though so a new set could well be in order in its future

so iv just looked and the nexen tyres on the are from last year and the falken tyres on the rear are from 2019, so they may have just gone hard…

it explains why the TC goes wild when pulling away from lights and junctions for a few seconds even when done so smoothly

Looks as if you and the other half were having a fine day out in Sunny Scarbados prior to p/x-ing it.:sun_with_face::beach_umbrella:

That is why the memory is so precious in that car. She had cancer and it was our last trip out. I was sad to see the car go when I got the ND. Pity I could not have had both…

Clarky, I am not the only one then.

As noted here, I also had the traction control off. I think it has probably saved me without me knowing on a number of occasions. The tyres were PS4 in their prime. My only other incident was a deep puddle aquaplane on the earlier rainsports, which were a little old.

I am a very in-experienced “sports car” user (Fiat X1-9 40 years ago, MX-5 for last 4). Do the more experienced know if the MX-5 is especially “spinable”? Lots of effort has been made to reduce the moment of inertia in that axis; notes on NC say that, cf. NB, engine moved backwards, battery moved closer to centre.

@Zac_Cullip Sorry to hijack post, Zac.

I think you would have to be trying hard to lose it on the road, unless caught out by say spilt diesel on a wet road surface.

I had a work colleague who track tests his NC regularly, with the odd video seen to show a few rotations.

But on the road…? I will leave that for others to joyly comment on :grinning:

I just noticed you are in MK. I am not a local but I have thoroughly enjoyed Standing Way a few times. It seems a wonderful MX-5 road; constantly up and down through the gears and left-right-left of the roundabouts. If I did live locally, I would make frequent excuses to pop to the shops.
