According to my dealer, production ( of the 2 Litre anyway) has been paused, and will be restarted only when the next facelift version is ready,Â

So the man from Mazda at the NEC classic car show was economical with the truth when he said all the current engines would be available in 2020.

This is being run from Japan as they have to subsidise the price of European cars in 2020.
The guy at the show is just a PR person who would not know what Japan has decided.
All Mazda Europe do is run the main parts logistics, European homologation and the technical support overall operation.
Then each European country reports back to Japan.
Surely sales will plummet. When thinking of buying a MK4 I didnât consider the 1.5l. I wanted the updated 2.0l.
My wife has a Mazda 2 1.5. itâs ok but nothing special.
Hopefully when we leave the EU all these silly rules can be dumped.
Iâm thinking about swapping mine next year, a new 2.0 litre MX-5 RF is on my shortlist.
However, if thatâs going to be problematic to source - and / or with a significant price rise from Mazda & a lack of a decent discount, both driven by scarcity - then itâs likely that Iâll be looking at something else (Polo GTi?).
The ND 1.5âs a nice car of course, just unfortunately not right for me.
Yes Mazda Management in Japan has said that sales will suffer and that they are doing their best to keep the Dealer network in Europe in one piece but it will be painfull to both Mazda Corporate "the fine fronm the EC for all modes sold in 2020, European Mazda Dealers due to loss of sales and problems with car availability price and Mazda Customers, I posted an interview with one of the Mazda bosses in Japan earlier in the thread that explained all this!

The government has clearly announced on a number of occasions that we will keep to these measures when we leave the EU!
Virtually all car manufacturers are not ready for this, not just Mazda.
VW Audi, Merc, BMW, Suzuki, Subaru etc have started to publish price increases.
Tesla will not have a problem here and companies like Nissan and Renaul amoung others with Electric car production and Full Hybrid production will be less so but again most of them have a majority of Internal Combustion engine production.
I have read that availability next year of the 2.0 litre model will be limited but not stopped. Why is the only option for future MX5s only a Hybrid? What about the SkyactiveX engine? Mazda have invested a lot in this engine. Surely this would be preferable to a Hybrid/EV for most people.
Dimensions of the Skyactiv X mean that a complete redesign would be required apparently.

I was told below about a month ago by my dealer after I bought mine
Mazda want all 2019 models sold or registered before
the end of the year, they are currently basing on the UK leaving the EU in which case
they understand the new EU regulations regarding annual average emmissions on total sales will still apply to the UK. However they believe it would be calculated seperately from the rest of Europe and the MX5 being light and well above the 95gr co2 level would have a big hit on the average if they sell similar numbers to previous years so they are going to limit 2020 to only 1,000 cars for the UK compared to about 4,000 for 2019.
He also said that as no cars are directly imported from Japan to the UK but via their centre in Zeebrugge they earlier this year leased some land and had moved a lot of cars
(not just MX5s) into the UK in case we had left with no deal on 31st Oct so could account for the 4,000 figure and probably another reason why they keen to sell stock cars before the end
Of the year. And for 2020 the se-l models will only be available as 1.5l and that 2.0l models will be called sport tech and gt sport tech.
Am a bit surprised that they would cut the 2.0l numbers rather than overall numbers as I think itâs the 5% of sales with the highest emissions that wonât be taken in to account
until 2021 and believe the 2.0L MX5 is the highest they sell in the U.K., not sure what 5% of their total sales equates to in numbers but that could be what they limit the

For a start the rules are not silly and secondly the UK has already said it will adopt the same standards as the EU when we leaveâŚ
Agreed, not silly at all.
We (and I include myself) love our CO2 emitting cars which cause air pollution issues leading to deaths and no end of problems for future generations.
Not wanting to start a climate debate, but I agree with these EU rules. We do need to change our habits. For our government to hit net zero by 2050, weâll have to accelerate the transition to low carbon transport.
I have PHEV as my main car. Iâm also a petrolhead (with a couple of great classic sportscars and a 2.0l MX5). I love wafting around on electricity in the PHEV. Iâve driven a model S P85D and its astonishing.
Hybrid and fully electric cars are nothing to be scared of.
They just need to become more affordable and a little more exciting for legacy petrolheads

Electric cars = a glorified milk floats and fork lifts, those that truly believe that the electric powered cars are less damaging to the world seriously want their heads feeling , long life technology, big flag for that⌠but these will be more damaging to the planet in the end than the combustion engines ,as is nearly everything humans do as they rape the planet of everything anyway, as it all comes down to the same points âŚâgreedâ, âmoneyâ and âpowerâ.

That is a surprise and such a shame. The Skyactiv X could have been a great solution.

I wonât dispute your point about âgreedâ, âmoneyâ and âpowerâ. Three characteristics well embedded in big business and politics. I will correct you on the climate impact of electric cars vs combustion ones. No end of (truly independent) studies have been carried looking at well to wheels analysis comparing the oil lifecycle vs the lithium cobalt battery one and all they are clear that electric is less damaging for the planet and local air quality ⌠by some margin
âplanes coughing out â â â â â Indeed they do and thatâs another problem to be fixed. Small electric planes are now in use in the US (up 7 passengers) and Norway is fully electrifying all internal flights by 2030. Hard to see what solution there is for large planes. Maybe hydrogen.

That sounds crazy . So the EU rules are promoting sales of heavy SUVs etc over lightweight cars like the MX5

This thread makes very bleak reading in my opinion. And it sounds to me like the future is looking very grim for we MX-5 owners.
Surely most of the air pollution comes from diesel-engined vehicles - weâve all followed these filthy things belching out thick black acrid smoke every time they hit the âgoâ pedal, but petrol-engined cars seem to have been tarred with the same brush, and there is now an almost indecent haste to get rid of every internal combustion vehicle on the planet. I read somewhere recently that diesel-engined ships pollute the atmosphere more than our private cars do (and with little regulation), and like someone asked earlier in this thread, what about aircraft ? And there is currently an advert on TV which states that farming of animals is the worldâs largest polluter of all - farting cows and all that !
Electric vehicles will be no cleaner for the environment until we develop a perfectly clean way of generating electricity - after all, we have to charge our EVs somehow! And as long as the different countries of the world keep using oil and coal-fired power stations, all these EU regs are a complete waste of time and money.Â
There are many countries in the world that simply cannot or will not, comply with these anti-pollution measures (they canât afford to) - India and China spring immediately to mind, and what about Brazil ? Even Donald Trump has reportedly now reneged on previously-agreed anti-pollution measures, because they are ruining the US economy.
