Removing the MX5OC window sticker

I tried to remove the 2017 MX5OC membership sticker from my windscreen to replace it with the 2018 one, but it seems to be strongly glued to the glass, and scraping just tears off little bits. The result is a sticky mess and half the sticker still glued to the screen. Any suggestions? A suitable solvent to remove the sticky glue?

I have used meths on a microfibre to remove stubborn glue, may need a bit of elbow grease as well.

Probably too late for you Trevor - but next time use dental floss.  Peel up an edge, or corner of the sticker, then use a length of floss, stretched taut, and use in a sawing motion behind the sticker.

Thinners should remove the sticky stuff from glass.  Or try one of those sanitising hand gels.

Hair dryer & peel off then remove clue with white spirit or Stanley knife blade.

I must have been sent a substandard membership sticker as I’ve just removed mine.Peeled off no problem and took all of 3 seconds

Vinyl glues are a b*stard at times. Acetone (nail polish remover) is about the cheapest stuff you can get quickly and very good at removing most glues.
Ethanol/isopropanol (hand sanitisers) might work but I’ve found more glues resistant to alcohols than to acetone.

Time for a rethink on these?

They’re a right pain

I really think they need to review this annual sticker. It’s a real pain!

After the first issue I made a ‘peel’n’stick’ out of the second one by covering the sticky side with clear film then sticking the back of that onto clear book covering film.

Cut out with a 3/8" border this was easily attached to the inside of the screen but can be removed without all the mess, need for scrapers or solvents.

Perhaps a round one that fits inside the old redundant tax disk holders?

Time for a rethink on these.

Oh - and 3 X 404 errors ending in three messages, none of which appeared to have posted And now all are there! Grr

I invested in a sticker removal kit from Amazon and it’s brilliant at removing all sorts of stickers. The solvent is a clear liquid, not acetone or meths.

Current price £1.78. Raid your piggy bank. Link follows:

This is what I got from the linked product;

Product Safety

    • Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects
    • Very toxic to aquatic life
    • Flammable liquid and vapour
    • May cause drowsiness or dizziness
    • May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways
    • Causes skin irritation
Also bottle states isoparrafinic hydrocarbons. Same league as petrol/kerosine.

Acetone is clear, sometimes a colourant is added. “Meths” have been discontinued in favour of denatured ethanol (methanol is bad stuff) and has a colourant added.

Personally, I’d stick with either acetone or denatured alcohol. Better yet, filtration masks are cheap and there are a range of them. Look for something for organic solvents and you’re good to go.

Hi team

I am glad this subject about the window sticker as got mentioned,i thought it was just me that found it imposs to remove,i have never known anything stick to windscreen like it in my life,my 2017 sticker will not even lift a corner at all and seems to now be a permanent part of the car,so the new one has not been put on at all,do not want to scrape as the mark 4 screen seems to be a more softer fragile screen than other cars i have.

All best Simon still with 2017 sticker on

Thanks for all the suggestions - you’ve given me plenty to work on!

Do we even need an annual membership sticker? Each to their own but personally I’ve never seen the point of them. I have my generic OC sticker in the top centre of the windscreen and that’s it. I’ve had horrendous problems in the past with stickers. The parking tags for the British GP were always the worst and they were big things too. I don’t think I ever managed to get all the residue off.

I’ve left the original (in my case) 2015 sticker firmly welded to the windscreen. All the subsequent ones are in the “cubby” between the seats.  I for one second the suggestion by “Doug” for a circular one that would fit into an old style tax disc holder - great idea!

I’ve ordered the kit suggested by cliveju - we’ll see how it goes

Quite.

I suggested this several times years back.

Nobody bothered.

No room for common sense here eh?

Hairdryer and remove any adhesive remnants with Tar/Glue remover. No ‘KIT’ required
