Retro and budget home hi fi

its like a status quo concert barrie

i bet mrs B is loving it

Don’t wire the two sets in series. If the circuitry in the crossovers or the drivers aren’t perfectly matched it might upset the sound.

Two speaker outputs on the receiver so just connect one set to each. With both outputs active you will have the 4 ohms that the amp can handle perfectly well.

Actual listening volume is a logarithmic function. With a 30 watt amplifier if you turn it down from the max to what sounds like half volume the actual power will be 3 watts. Quarter volume will be 0.3 watts. I doubt if you will every turn it up above around 10 watts anyway.

None of that seems to make any sense I know but just think about it. We’ve all listened to an old transistor radio that gave us plenty of volume while on the beach or out in the garden. Take the back off and the tiny little two or three inch speaker will probably be rated at 0.1 watt.

I know, I know Geoff. She’s at work so I’m just dreaming I guess

Worst case scenario Barrie. If the Missus chucks you out UltraViolet68 and her other half appear to have a spare bedroom that would suit you nicely.

Hi Paul, good idea running both sets of speakers straight from the amp, it just means two sets of cables. Actually might be easier that way as I would still have to run a positive wire and a negative plus link cables so would end up slightly butchering some nice cables, whereas, running separately, just means another full pair of cables  interesting about the output, you’re right, I listen to my AIWA at the moment and the power meters (not sure how accurate) my own listening levels only show between 0.1w to 6w maximum output at 8 ohms, goes up to 60w  more than sufficient at the lower end of the scale for me

Barrie

Yep - I have a fair few old bits like that - hence never selling on.

Some bits were DIY self-builds too, which always awkward to sell as no CE compliance and as such not worth anything really even when works really well.

That’s the thing for me, (at my level of collecting)  I can acquire equipment for not a lot, spend a little getting it right and as original as possible, then just enjoy it. A lot of things get passed over, folk don’t want retro stuff going pop and the resultant hassle (and expense) of getting it fixed, suits me though!  I also like to test out things, I can swap stuff, buy something different etc and not spend a lot in doing that, Long may it continue

Barrie

Barrie.  Have the house foundations checked before you let rip with all those big speaker units on full bass!!!

UV.  Reading your post about multiple systems in multiple rooms made me wonder where I’d come across a similar set-up…then I realised it was here, they’ve not been used for quite a while so maybe that’s why I forgot!  Silly old me!-

Hi Roger! I know what you mean  not had chance to do anything yet so I’m still safe  (for now)

Barrie

Purely on a  technical viewpoint I doubt if you will get any better sound with both sets of speakers. In fact it may have a negative impact on the ‘sound stage’. If you are driving one set to a maximum of 6W there won’t be anything to gain with two sets running at 3W each. From an aesthetic point it will look impressive. I believe the ideal positioning for speakers is at ear level so maybe both pairs stacked with the upper pair only driven nay be the way to go.

I’m not going to enter into any discussions on valve sound, analogue, digital or anything along those lines. If you like the sound of anything then that’s all that matters. A lot of the appreciation of hi-fi is how it looks. Just like food, if it looks nice it tastes better. Those retro panel lights and dancing VU meters just add to the enjoyment.

Well, it’s Monday, Mrs B is back at work, time for me to have a mess around with some of the hifi stuff

Not quite a first but almost  here is a link to a very short clip of what I’ve been up to this morning

The Delta 75 isn’t operational yet so all going through the AIWA mini compo 22 system. From the speaker switch box to the LEAK 600’s via a small Behringer equaliser. The speakers are great  you can see lurking behind the righ one on the floor, a pair of replacement 12" woofers for the 2060’s, I just can’t get the voice coils right, they still grate  The new ones are slightly smaller than the Leak sandwich woofers so I’m making up a pair of mdf rings to accommodate them ( when I get round to it ) My eldest son is picking up the replacement DELTA amp this weekend and it should be up and running over Christmas, all being well

This video wasn’t intentional, just me faffing around

Barrie

That Leak turntable looks great doesn’t it ?  Will look forward to more videos once you get the rest of the Leak system working.

Incidentally, what was the music you were playing please ?

Hi Chris, thank you. The music is from Dave Brubeck and the album is called

THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET TIME OUT  Time further out. A double album by CBS. I’ll have to check the actual track, it just happened to be playing when I decided to do that video

I’m always looking for bits n bobs, HIFI related and was watching a glass and wood 5 shelf stand on the bay of E. Anyway, looked fine so I put a bid in 10 seconds from the end of the auction. I got it for £5.00! Yes, a fiver  These are listed at between £75 and £150 typically. That’s not to say that they actually sell for that but come on, £5.00 is not a lot for a quality item like this. So, I got the 5 out if the garage ( it’s not moved since the MOT) and drove to Stafford to pay and collect it this morning. M62/M60/M6 were all congested due to accidents, cars upside down, all sorts of problems but hopefully no one seriously hurt. What is it with a bit if inclement weather though? Poor visibility due to fog, cars with not even sidelights on, let alone main and fogs.

I felt a bit embarrassed picking up the HIFI stand as no one else had bid, hence the fiver, so I gave the chap a tenner!  It was funny, as when he came out if the house, saw the 5, he said, “you’ll not get the stand in there mate”  I went equipped though and five minutes later, I’d stripped it all down and it was in the boot!

These are the pieces back at home after a good clean and a mild refurbishment. I’ve ordered new gel pads off Amazon for the pins on the 3 intermediate shelves (pins on the left of the picture) this will have it looking like new!

Each shelf is etched with the brand name and a BS number, they are all almost perfect condition. The stand is no longer made by STANDSUNIQUE but they do some nice but expensive TV/AUDIO accessories. When I get the LEAK amp sorted, the AIWA mini stack will be going into the new stand, the pins allow the 3 intermediate shelves to be adjusted for spacing, so should look nice? It’s not for full size HIFI anyway so should suit the AIWA nicely. I’ll get a pic up when it’s reassembled

Barrie

That didn’t take long!

Barrie

You do seem to have a great eye for a vintage Hi-Fi bargain, Barrie.

Merry Christmas.

I look forward to the continuing saga in the new year !

Plenty of time left Chris for faffing around this year

Heres today’s bit.

Got the AIWA mini compo 22 into the new stand! Installed the faux rack handles to give it a bit more width! The components are only 9" wide!  I also swapped out the LEAK 2060’s (which need the 12" woofers replacing) with the 600’s that were passed on to me the other week  far better condition in their standard form I have to say, than my original pair, lively sound with plenty of bass too!  I will put the new woofers in to the 2060’s when I get chance, need to make up some adapter rings as the original woofers must be imperial size? The new ones definitely metric   I want to fit new binding posts to the 600’s too, for the banana plugs, same as the other pair.

Now, if I can just pick up a full width multi shelf stand for a bargain price, I can mount the AKAI 4000 7" reel to reel along with the LEAK DELTA 75, once I’ve taken possession of the 2nd working unit and swapped the chassis into the one I received previously with the speakers, which cosmetically is nigh on immaculate

I need that spare room sooner than Mrs B is anticipating  then this lot can go in there along with the HITACHI music centre and the 2nd AIWA mini compo 22 system which has its own wooden rack housing, quite a rare beast ( well, not quite a beast due to its miniature size)  I’ve also been looking at some full size seperates with silver fronts, VU meters etc. Single cassette deck, equaliser etc. Something will crop up I’m sure

This thread has just hit 28,000 page views!  Thanks to everyone who pops in for a look and those that add to this burgeoning repository for rose tinted and also very accurate nostalgic reflections and advice on HIFI related stuff! I’ve just been reading back on some of the posts and pics, very entertaining. Almost feel like giving the HITACHI an airing  Think Mrs B might flip though? One stereo too many perhaps  Good news on the LEAK DELTA 75, my eldest lad has finally picked up the recent purchase on the bay of E. Turns out, the chap that sold it to me, repairs vintage stuff and has offered advice on the issue that affects the original one that I received via a member on here  He has also included a schematic and a list of work carried out on the new one, in the box, how nice is that? My lad will be up from St Albans next weekend (can’t make Christmas Day as he’s working) so I can start on the resssurection work  can’t wait!

Barrie

You were up rather early this morning, Barrie.  I’m sure Mrs. B. would flip if you fired up one of your stereos at what most normal folk would consider the middle of the night, especially this time of year when it’s still dark outside.

Perhaps you had better invest in some headphones my friend !
