Retro and budget home hi fi

Yes, it’s definitely more involved! :grinning: TBH, it’s almost a ritual and for me, reserved for more ‘special’ occasions. Definitely very nice to have access to the retro stuff. :ok_hand:

Jukebox is played every night as we dine. It’s not a bad playlist at the moment.

Visions of the local “Teddy Boy”/“Rocker” cafe of the '50’s and early '60’s flash across my mind!

Yes, I agree.

And it would be nice to see a photo of your jukebox Sean…

Unfortunately it isn’t one of those 50’s diners ones. It’s a 70’s cabinet type but still quite cool.

At the time, 1812 Overture was great…not sure how the neighbours felt.

To think I gave the thing away in August 1971 (after he topped himself) to a neighbour, plus all his 2 dozen odd Readers Digest albums, some of which had never been removed from their sleeves. The things we did…
I recall the spindly legs on the left handed unit were unsafe and I had to re-inforce them. The right hand cabinet was light and not an issue. There were only 4 very short grub screws per leg into the base.
60 Guineas with optional legs…just Googled it!

Your poor old Dad Rob (And your Mum and the family of course). What a hell he must have been going through inside to do that. Many people don’t realise just how bad things must (Appear to?) be for someone to take that final desperate action! It is not a sign of weakness, it is a final, desperate cry for help that is tragically too, too late. I lost a close cousin (born within weeks of each other and often mistaken for twins) to that, and after a breakdown some years ago came very close myself. You have my sincere sympathy!

Getting back onto the subject of mixing tech from different eras - I have three Sony Hi-Fi systems from the 1970s (pictures of which have been posted on this thread in the past).

One such set-up is a TA70 amp and the matching ST70 tuner, which I have in my summer house. The tuner doesn’t actually get used much to be honest, because much of the time, I simply play music from my MP3 player through this system. It’s so convenient, with currently some 700 tracks on it, covering four different genres (I like pigeon-holing my music, so that I can select the music to suit my mood at any one time). Try doing that with a vinyl record / cassette / compact disc !

I do love the mellow, warm sound of 70s gear - even with a 21st century MP3 player as sound source.

No worries, 50 years back.
Result of gross patient /surgery overwork during 68 UK epidemic…the Mao Flu.
That little beasty took out around 30,000 I think.
My job, aged 16, with brother was disinfecting the Waiting Rooms and Surgery.
I smelled very clean…

Thank you. It’s now moved to the living room and it is a nice enough piece of furniture to have there. Ridiculously heavy though.

Speakers behind lead glass Sean?

Indeed and two amps below the record unit. Much more complex than i would have thought but fortunately there is a local chap who works on them. .

Lockdown has been bad for state of mind for many. The lack of pint in the pub with pals or coffee and a cake with friends and relatives can make anyone feel alone and vulnerable.

Always someone on here to throw in a few cheeky comments though. I’ve done more forum PMing than ever too. There’s more to this forum than diagnosing faults on MX-5s. It’s been a big help for many I’m sure.

If anyone is struggling please let us all know. Personally I’ve got lots of friends here that I’ve never met. I’m hoping to meet some of them one day but most I will never meet. Would still be heartbreaking to lose any of them.

I’m always up for a PM chat with anyone.
