does anyone know of a good (reasonably priced) roof top box that will fit onto the boot rack? I need something fairly big, rainproof, lockable and easy to put on/off.
I too like Mazda-Mender have one fitted to a mk2 (bet everyone tells the ins companys everthing they have done to there 5s ) Come Aug the trailer will be hooked up and Cornwall here we come…
When we went to Spain/ France etc in 2009 one of the guys with us had a pair of motorcycle panniers (hard case type), with the fittings from the bike fastened to the boot rack. They lock on and are secure. Also gave rear vision between them. A top box would also do the job. A trip to ebay should sort it
Also remove the space saver and you have more room in the boot. Just get a can of tyre inflating gunge but get the type that can be cleaned out of the tyre. I do this as there will be no where to put the wheel that has come off so you might as well go and get it repaired / new tyre straight away.
You know hotels? Well they are like camping but with a real bed, and clean toilets, and heating. Only slightly more expensive, but excellent value if you’re the sort of chap who can’t get a two-man tent, clothes for a week and 4 spare tyres in to an MX5, whcih is how much stuff was in my MX5 the last time I went camping in it. Hotels are nicer though.
It’s weird that. The rear structure of a mk2 must be pretty much identical to a mk1 (I assume, I’ve never been under a mk2), so why not allow towing with it? Mazda are missing out on the huge caravanning market.
I can understand fitting the tow ball, but why not tell your insurance company? It’s not like they won’t notice a trailer behind your car should you be involved in any RTA. It’s not worth the risk and it’s not like a tow ball adds much, if anything, to your insurance costs.
You are going to tow a caravan with an MX5? How much does the MX5 weigh? How much does a caravan weigh? I wouldn’t like to try it with much more than a trailer tent.
Sorry, my sarcastic font looks just like my serious font. No, I wouldn’t tow a caravan with an MX5. When I’ve been travelling in my MX5 I’ve slept in tents, hotels, a lean-to built against the side of the car and even in just the car, but I can’t imagine a combination of budget and quality that would lead to a caravan being the optimum sleep solution, even if wanted to ruin a perfectly good drive by dragging something behind the car.
When discussing the towing weights I think you’d have to refer to Mazda, and they say zero for a mk2, so it’s a grey area.
top box is going to be for general shopping as I’m getting an autogas conversion done. As it is, we’ve already been camping with it round scotland and cornwall and whales - can fit a fair amount in/on but the new gas tank will fill the boot. just wanting to tow a tiny trailer.
unfortunately, it would completely void my insurance if I had an accident. Unless I can quickly take it off again. I just rang up a mazda dealer and they said they couldn’t fit a tow bar because it’s not suitable so I’d have to weld one on myself. Bit rubbish really.
what you need is an hitch bar from state side(see Rocky) ,through Moss, forget the mazda dealership, speak to the ones that have done it,and bought the T-shirts.
Easy to fit and as said, all out of the way until needed
well I just talked to my insurance co. and they said that, as far as they’re concerned, I could fit a tow bar and it wouldn’t affect my insurance policy at all (no extra cost), and there was no other conditions attached - they didn’t even want a certificate to show it had been done by a proffessional.
