Royal Steering Wheels - Recommended!

Hi All,

Just thought I would share my recent experience with Royal Steering Wheels after I got my exchange refurbished wheel from him on Saturday:

  • Customer Service - very good. Clear and concise email communications, and very accommodating to requests e.g. fittings times, order delays (I needed to delay my order until after being paid and he was very good about that).
  • Quality - perfect! The work is certainly as good as something you would expect to get from a high end OEM and the materials, shaping, stitching, looks etc are all just as requested. A pleasure to use.
  • Fitting - again this was very good - quick but careful and looked as though he has done that wheel a 100 times before. I went for the exchange option and had him fit the wheel for me for a very small extra cost. With the exchange he refurbed a wheel from his stock, then swapped them over at fitting but retaining all the bits off the original wheel, so the trim, buttons etc.
  • Cost - good value for money for the quality of the work.
All in all, I'd thoroughly recommend him for any steering wheel work - its how Mazda should have done the wheel in the first place!

Ive used Royal too a few months ago for my 2009 MX5. Superb - cant recommend highly enough. I didn’t have the red stripe.

As you say its how Mazda should have hadone. Makes a real difference to driving

Once I’ve got a few more Quid together I shall be getting him to do my gear knob, handbrake leaver and gators to match

They do that too?

Have they already got the patterns (Mk3) or do you need to send your originals?

Thinking more of the gaitors to refinish, the gear knob sounds a good call too though.

Hi TMW it looks great and is exactly the same as mine would be.

Are you able to give an idea of the cost for your exchange & fit version.

He needs my parts to do the refurb, but he has quoted me on the work so I have to assume he can do it no issues!

@essexlad I PMd you some details on it

Hi I wanted to do the same thing too but after a few unanswered calls, texts and emails to royalsteering I didnt think they were trustworthy. I imagined how that would be trying to chase them up after id paid them already!

It can sometimes take him a day to respond to an email but I think its just him on his own doing the business so will be a very busy man. I’d say give him another try - my experience so far has been nothing but reliable! Also, you only pay a deposit up front, the bulk of the balance is paid on collection / completion etc so its in his interest to keep you happy!

I also think he works on his own. I made contact then left it a while (I also found a couple of days delay on him returning emails), but I’m so pleased I had it done.

Persevere mate, it really makes driving the car a pleasure!

You won’t regret it

Everything I’ve ever read about the wheel refurbs from Royal, and certainly not just on here, excludes the price? Is it some sort of unwritten (excuse the pun) thing that you can’t disclose publicly what the costs are? I realise folk will have different combinations of design/materials/DIY or fitted/ exchange or whatever but is it too much to ask that a price for whatever combo has been used, be disclosed? Apologies to OP if they have other reasons for not disclosing the costs? TBH, for me at least, a “guide” price would make me feel much more comfortable in approaching Royal to get my wheel refurbished? At least I would have an idea and if that “guide” price was beyond my budget, then I wouldn’t be wasting the (obviously very busy) chaps time by getting a quote and then finding it was beyond my spending limit?

Been over a week now rang him a few times different days no answer and also filled out the online enquiry form but no replies

sorry mate, didn’t even notice you’d asked!

I paid £50 deposit and then booked a time to have fitted (get him to do, don’t attempt yourself). This is copied from the email confirming my order

Order:
Mx5 mk 3.5 2009 - Thicker, Thumb grips added, Perforated leather on sides, Smooth top/bottom, Red stitching

Price:
145GBP + 15GBP fitting. ( 110GBP left to be paid on collection)

You turn up, he takes your old wheel off, fits his recovered wheel and connects the electrics on the steering wheel and job done. He keeps your s/wheel and covers it ready for next guy.

I recon its the best £160 I’ve spent! You’ll love it

I’m waiting the return of my wheel from Royal. I’ve spec’d smooth top/bottom, perforated sides, thumb grips/profiling and red stitching. £205 including return postage if that helps anyone.

davy and ian , both your wheels sound very similar , why the price difference ???

regards.

Thank you guys, I guess that’s done it for me  I will be in touch with Royal shortly? That is a great price when you look at the finished product?

Barrie

I was wondering prices for a Mk3, seems like the average price is £150.  That’s a straight, place order he sends the wheel done you send him your wheel back so no fitting costs.

It could be handy if he gave a price (basic) for each model SW then extras added for such things like different finishes embelishments etc.

Well, based on advice/info given out on here, I’ve pulled the trigger? OK, so I’ve actually just squeezed it gently?  Will wait and see what comes back from Royal? I’m 3 hours away but don’t mind a day out, so have gone for exchange+fitting? It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while but was unsure about the costings? I got marked down in the competitions at last years National due to a worn steering wheel? This should sort that bit out?  Just need a new hood and a respray now, oh and new seats? Rear deck plates and a new filler flap, boot interior plastics, headlamps and I’m good to go!

Barrie

WOW , do they do a CHROME steering wheel ???

JOKES

seriously , nice one barrie , …its on my “to do” list…

look forward to seeing it.
