Here we go for David’s first Mid Week Run of 2025.
Meeting Wednesday 9th April at B&Q (Norwich) South car park NR4 6FB at 9.00am for 9.15am departure with run of about 1hr 15mins to the RSPB Reserve at Minsmere (£9pp - Members free). Note the slightly earlier start.
On arrival we’ll grab a coffee before heading out for perhaps up to a couple of hours walking by woods, scrapes (shallow lakes) and sea. There are opportunities to rest in hides and look out for birds, so bring binoculars & cameras. Being the 9th April there may be some migrants eg Swallows but it is a bit early for most species. However the resident birds should be active and we are sure to see Marsh Harriers (photo) cruising just above the reed beds and we may hear Bitterns booming (calling).
PLEASE NOTE - Cost of entry now seems to be £10pp but we’ll see if they hold to the £9 when we get there. I am closing the signing up for this run as I have advised the RSPB of our number as they requested this and at 14 people this makes for quite a crowd in bird hides. Anyone else wanting to join us means being on a cancellation list.
Count me in as well. I’m expecting you to lead the convoy like a bat out of hell so I can road test the recent four wheel alignment and new Uniroyal Rainsports
Thanks, Laurie
That’s a great members event! I’ve been a casual birder since the age of seven and that is just perfect for adding another interest into a driving day out. Never been to Minsmere but if it’s anything like Cley-Next-The-Sea reserve you can get blown away by the wealth of bird life in just a few hundred yards. Some birds get so used to humans being close without eating or shooting them they can be quite tame. The bearded tit, an exotic bird, was an example and the highlight at CNTS
The pic of the harrier is so much more than focus.
Oh Rainsports now they’re going to be my next choice of tyre. Currently got Kuhmos on, which I might add I’m happy with, but Rainsports get a lot of recomendations so I’ll be interested to see how you get on with these Laurie.
re. Beryl.
Paul,
Look forward to you joining this run. Not sure where you live and whether you’ll be at ‘the start’ or joining us enroute/at Minsmere. That Harrier was such a long way away when I took it, purely a record shot. I’m pretty rubbish at identifying some birds - waders, & warblers in particular so I photograph them as just record shots to help ID the bird. I’ll add you to ‘the list’.
Mate. I’m down in west cornwall. I can’t come to your event. But I just thought it was such an imaginative way to build your section of the club. I hope you get a great turnout
Ah, Cornwall excellent bird watching country your way Paul. Bit of a stretch for you to join us. I know you’re a regular contributor to the Forum which is great. I’m originally from South Devon and my Norfolk ‘tribe’, all ten of us, will be descending on the South Hams in August - not in the MX5. All the best to you all in Kernow.
Hi David - please count me in. Don’t know much about ornithology but will dig out my old binoculars and bluff my way through Minsmere as I did at Snetterton the other day!
Hi David and crew, will give this one a miss don’t think I will be up to driving that far in the 5 yet. Hopefully be able to join you all in May, have fun Mick & Gella.
See you another time Mick & Gella. Guess you are settled in to your new home but mention of not being up for a long run is a health issue - hope you’re up to full throttle soon.
Hi David settling in nicely now and yes it is a health issue just had another hernia op, I am hoping we can get to the Bird in Hand for the April meet though.
I’d like to come along also please. It’ll be my first club run out. Im in East Harling but will join you for the start in Norwich. Looking forward to it. Luckily I am an RSPB member.
