Should I get a stainless sports exhaust?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ND2
  2. I’m based near: __Mansfield
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Bastuck Stainless Steel Sports Exhaust System

Why not , it’ll sound good and if it’s a full system you might see some power gain , plus if your keeping the car a good stainless system will or should last

Yes get one, makes it sound like a sports car should!

I occasionally look at aftermarket exhausts and they are all stainless. You are spending a lot of money on sound and possibly an improvement in performance. It’s £500 better spent elsewhere but I suspect I’m in a minority here👍

You buy an exhaust for what? It’s got to be sound. Most improvements in performance are earlier; usually the header pipes.
Im a bit against loud exhausts, especially on cars that don’t deserve them. There is nothing so sad as a 125cc learner bike with all the baffles chiselled out: more noise and a bit slower…. A very loud small car with little more go than the average Golf is more likely to be laughed at than admired.
If you want to show off do it through the bends… that’s where I do childish things at 75👍
That’s years, not mph.

Who says it has to be loud?

^^^^^^not me. I suggested a change in sound not decibels

An increase in sound increases the decibels.

^^^^^ agreed. But a change of sound doesn’t necessarily. You could get deeper and more burbly without an increase in actual decibels.

Just an opinion……
I always think these sort of topics are a bit daft really.:man_shrugging:
If it’s something “You” fancy then just do it.
(I did for mine).
Some will agree and some will try and put you off with various reasons.

After all, no one seems to post about what sort of kitchen units or bathroom suites they should buy.
Or should I buy X Y over A D.

Surely an exhaust pipe is far more important than a kitchen unit or a bathroom suite! :joy:

Valid point! :flushed::laughing:

Just take care which one you choose, some sound terrible.

Did you go for it and get the exhaust ?

In the end I couldn’t see a good reason to get it, I was sorely tempted but didn’t go for it

It’s something you might do in the future , but I tend to think when I’m considering any mods etc that if I’ve got any doubts it’s probably a no .
I fitted a cobalt from MOSS Europe that sounds nice , suits the car , is it loud , well normal driving it has a nice meaty sound not loud but it’s there , if I put the boot down it sounds awesome and seems to suit the car . The build quality is very good , fitting was simple linned up perfectly with standard hangers and mid pipe .
Just for future reference .

Hi, still very much a fan of the Scorpion full system, ay least on my NC1. People have commented on how nice it sounds and I think it’s released a teeny bit more power? Or in my head anyway, which is where it counts :joy:

If it’s a full system you probably will see more power , at the moment I’m trying to talk myself out of a mid pipe and manifold , I expect yours sounds quite meaty , my concern is how loud mine would be if I went ahead with more exhaust mods , hmmm

Indeed, be careful and I speak from experience.
A search should find various threads on here about it.
Likewise, I am not getting into the MOT side either.
I have the Cobalt rear box and a 4-1 IL motorsport manifold.
It was all done under a fast road package at the time by Skuzzle Motor Sport.
I kept the original centre section with the cat and resonator box.
I have also kept all the original parts.
Seemed like a good idea at the time…….

However, after a while it became rather too loud!(I should add once the initial novelty factor faded away).
It’s the manifold that contributes to most of the noise, ( in my opinion).
There are other contributing factors also with regards to stainless steel.
I therefore took some advice from an exhaust specialist and had the resonator box taken out and replaced with a silencer of very nearly the same size as not to hinder ground clearance etc.
It settled it down a bit and is fine for me, but maybe not for others.
It is nice though particularly on mountain roads etc and is okay at motorway speeds.
Good luck.

Thanks for the feed back , yeah the performance manifold on another wise stock system can be loud I’ve heard a couple and that was certainly the case , I’ve not got to the stage where I’m after more power yet! Lol maybe once I’ve done some work on the suspension , roll bars probs first .
