Got the snow tyres on just in time!
Had a weekend away with the wife, we drive south to go through the Cairngorms and Trossachs. we got the snow ahead of everyone else
and yes… the roof was down! (i bought her a blanket lol)
Snows only going to get thicket and thicker. early winter. These tyres worked a treat with about an inch on the road. plenty of grip, including during emergency braking (for testing purposes)
kormoran, 215/45/17
about £100 a corner.
i’ll have these on until the temp picks up. then i will (if ive got the cash)) just hang these on the garage wall along with the alloys until next winter. then get some summer rubber and new metal
Put my winters on last week, replaced them last October (2023) with Yokohama BluEarth Winter V905 205/50R16 at £132 a corner. Was originally going for Hankook i*cept RS3 tyres but couldn’t get them in time.
I run AllSeasons during the autumn/winter, as the Cheshire climate tends to be a bit harder to read. Seemed the best compromise to me over a ‘full’ winter, given it’s not a daily driver and I have an AWD car available anyway
I used Goodyear Vectors on the NC and I’ve gone for Kumho Solus 4S on the ND, on a 2nd set of wheels.
I use the Vectors on my 4 wd Hyundai. I’ve always had pukka winters before , as I do a lot of driving over muddy fields and farm tracks but even in vile conditions last year they were excellent. And mean I don’t have to swap the tyres twice a year. I dare say ultimate grip is compromised in summer but it’s
a Hyundai Kona after all , so I don’t really care .
Those are 17" wheels, in the photo you’ve posted. So you could happily run 205 or 215 width on a 45 profile.
But if you’re going for a 2nd set of wheels for different rubber anyway, I’d go down a wheel size and width personally. I ran my last NC2 on Vectors in a 195/55/16 size for the autumn/winter time.
If you went for CrossClimate2s or Vectors, you’d be surprised at what they can deal with.
i dont know the NC wheel sizes im afraid. but i am also in Sunny Aberdeen
If it wasnt for the snow tyres, i wouldnt be able to do this…(either i would be stuck in the snow, or would have just spun out at the front would have lost traction)
Thanks for reply, and video! Looks like you’ve been having fun in the snow on your new tyres.
I will do a bit of research and maybe get these, or the Vectors. Last time we had snow in mid November it here till March so I defo need to do something.
The reasoning behind using narrower tyres in winter conditions, is they have a better chance of punching through snow and ice and finding traction.
A taller, thinner tyre puts more pressure on the surface and can compress the snow into the tread - which is how you get the sipes working for you and the tyre to ‘dig in’.
As far as AllSeasons are concerned, they’ve certainly come on a long way in recent years. I took a car on Vectors from here to the Alps one year, for example.
