The All New MX-5 ND, Mark 4 press review thread...

So forget all the other reviews the important people are getting to drive the car now on the road! This just in from our magazine editor Sharon;

“Since the first time I saw it at the unveiling in Barcelona I have coveted it and now having driven it I want one even more! It’s so light and responsive but really holds its ground and is just brilliant to drive…”

read the rest here, and more in Soft Top Hardtop in due course.

Nice one here from the other day:

Some good and interesting reviews!

Will be considering one in a year just can’t get settled with spec!

Want a 2.0 SEL for the less nanny gadgets and dark wheels but want leather!?

Be nice to see the press battling a 1.5 vs 2.0 in the real world.

Thanks to all for links.

Yes, it’s odd that if you want the gorgeous dark wheels/mirrors combo AND leather then the ONLY way to get it is a 1.5 sport!

But back on topic, this quite detailed review with some nice pics. Another one where the 1.5 just edges it for them as the fave

Here is a very detailed review - US centric - but with some gorgeous pics including lots of close-ups of interior features. Worth a read, and if not then definitely worth a look for the pics

Link below reveals the 1.5 was the intended engine, designed for the 5 and better suited but the Yanks wanted the 2 litre which is the revised previous lump!

As a 1.6 driver I was set on a 4 with the 2.0l but now thinking about the 1.5?

The decider is in the drive but overall costs of ownership with equal fun does make the little engine the better car!?

Anyway:

Hope it works

Hi again and another journalist favouring the 1.5!!

From the US perspective, but shot at the UK Scottish press launch. Entertaining presenter, good video and he’s a fan!

Interesting (annoying) how the Aussies get the option of an automatic gearbox and we don’t!

Also that the ND is significantly cheaper in Australia than the NC was.

Evo track test

“If you’ve ordered yourself a new MX5 and you don’t intend to do trackdays, I don’t think we can be friends” Tongue Out

Well I think that’ll be about 80% of owners then!
That’s an interesting review, but only relevant to Track use - so, of limited value to many.

Autocar dated 2nd Sept has a road test review of the 1.5 SE-L Nav.

Their overall verdict is 4.5 stars (out of 5 stars) and they say the new car is “an outstanding and usable sports car at an outstanding price”.  They also say “nothing short of a Caterham, Lotus or Ariel can equal what the MX-5 brings to the table”.

Their likes were: The spirited performance, the balanced and involving handling, excellent packaging, outstanding value.

Their dislikes were: Not as quick as a like-for-like hot hatch, overly light steering, imperfect cabin ergonomics.

Their ratings were:

  • Design and engineering = 4.5 stars (out of 5 stars).
  • Interior = 4 stars.
  • Performance = 4.5 stars.
  • Ride and Handling = 4.5 stars.
  • Buying and Owning = 4.5 stars.
  • Overall verdict = 4.5 stars.
They said they didn't give it 5 stars however because "it doesn't yet feel like the definitive version.  Most modern sporting tastes will crave a bit more performance than it offers.  The 2.0 litre model provides that, as well as even greater handling panache.  And yet the 1.5 has an authenticity that honours the original MX-5.  So just pay your money, take your choice and enjoy a far better driver's car than you'd believe £20,000 could secure".

Car Magazine has done a comparison between the 2.0 SE-L, a GT86 Aero, and some kind of TT.

They took them to some good roads too.

Good review and summed up as follows:

the MX-5 is everything an everyday sports car should be, right down to the effortless roof and undemanding yet high quality interior. Now to decide between the faster 2.0-litre and the more charismatic 1.5…’

ooh that 2.0l v 1.5l quandary
