Just shows what difference colour can make. I’ve never been a fan of the nd, however have to admit it looks stunning in orange. It could kick start sales too, especially if Mazda were to introduce more bold colours…purple perhaps?
Never been a fan of the ND or RF but even I will admit the soft version looks good in orange. The RF though, no, no. no…
It’s so interesting the different reaction on our website to the American ’Miata’ website…
Over on the USA website there is genuine excitement about the 30AE being teased and launched… an interest in features… a thrill of an exciting colour and great spec etc…
What do we get on the UK website…
“How expensive it is” (price is actually very keen for what you get)
”Its a horrible Orange” (Understood its a ‘marmite’ colour, in that you like it or you don’t…)
”The insurance will be too high” (not based on any fact at this point in time)
”It’s got a ginger Tom cats bum hole” (we are not sure it has the reversing camera apeture that i believe is being referred to here?)
”I can get all the bits separately and cheaper” (Good luck with that…Recaros and those Ray wheels aren’t as cheap as you may think)
”Don’t like this”
”Don’t like that”
”Don’t like the other”
HEY ITS A NEW SPECIAL EDITION MAZDA MX5 PEOPLE!!
I thought we liked Mazda MX5s here? it cannot be that bad can it really? 500 Americans decided it was great for them in only 4 hours (sold out)??
If you don’t like it you do have a choice, you don’t have to buy it… simple as that…
Personally I like the 30AE a lot but I’m not in the market for a new car at this time.
So whilst I am all for constructive criticism and champion free speech, can I just ask have we become that dissatisfied with everything in life in the UK, that we are now just as the Australians would say “Whinging Pommes”…
Congratulations to the few (possibly many) that have already have ordered thier 30AEs in the UK… don’t be put off by the moans, groans and put downs of others… I look forward to seeing your car in all its specialness at a future Rally.
Keep the pressure up Rich… you know she will crack eventually
I agree with you Mark. I rang up and paid a deposit at 9am yesterday as I feel that it’s good value and a great spec car. The ZE40 Rays alone are £3000 without tyres, the seats would be circa £1500, the Brembos £1000 and what price for the exclusivity of being one of only 400 in the UK. I’m really excited, I think this is the best spec limited edition Mazda have ever done. Just got to be patient until June or July delivery.
I think you’ll find that most of the comments were made with more than a touch of , the usual sort of joshing that goes on in the forum. Of course we wish anybody who buys the 30AE all the very best, what we don’t need is someone taking umbrage and saying
, you can’t say that. If you read the whole thread you will see that it’s been lighthearted all the way through
. Please lighten up people and get a sense of
.
Just seems a little strange that it is based on the Sport Nav + rather than the Sport Nav GT +. For such a special, special as the 30th anniversary I would have thought making it top of the range plus all the extras would have been appropriate.
I’m not knocking it. I’m with Markmoddy on this one. Loving the fact that it’s a bold new colour with extras that make it obviously something special.
Would I buy one? No because I don’t buy new cars. However I tend to keep my MX-5s for 3-5 years so there just might be a 30AE on my drive around 2022.
Looking forward to seeing one in the flesh too.
I think the colour is great, a refreshing change to the modern trend of dark invisible cars. The colour reminded me of my slightly less vibrant old Mk1 Cavalier (Colorado Beige but always known as the Orange car rather than the Yellow car).
People can say whatever they want to… I’m not buying one so I’m not defending my position here… and I take no ‘umbridge’ what so ever about any of the comments made in josh/ tongue in cheek posts earlier in this thread at all…
However what I do find very interesting is that since I made my post, with a positive attitude to the new Mazda MX5 ND 30AE, there has been quite a few posts from people who are excited to have made their reservation/ paid a deposit or positive posts about liking the 30AE…
Its great to hear their news, as we all know to get a new/ or new to you MX5 is something special indeed!
Possibly those people felt a little more encouraged to post to this thread, after a little positivity was shown here?
Signing off now with the phrase… “just saying”
One person (RJS 463) equates to “quite a few people” who at this time have said they’ve made reservations/paid deposits.
Just saying.
Was editing my post as you posted…
Me thinks you “doth protest too much”…
Now if they’d made a proper coupe as well I’d be in there with my deposit post haste! I don’t like the RF format and I’ve already got a soft top ND which I love and I’d keep.
It is a stunning car, no doubt . Any owner will need to be very careful parking though. Imagine kerbing one of those wheels at £750 each a pop
Nice article on the Top Gear website with lots of pictures. The colour looks so much better in daylight photos. Launch video didn’t do it justice.

So far only 4 comments, all positive, including an Audi TTRS owner who still lusts after the Mazda.
OUCH
can you imagine… I’d be like
Thats what I’m like with ny Zsport, heard the BBS alloys are a silly price to replace so avoid any indent in the road that resembles a pot hole and park about a foot away from kerbs
Last time I looked ZSport wheels were over a grand each. Centre cap sir? That will be another 50 quid.
Cheapest way of buying a set of ZSport wheels and tyres is to buy a ZSport, take of the wheels and scrap it.
“The ZE40 Rays alone are £3000 without tyres.”
I am no expert on these wheels but on reading the Mazda sales literature I see the following--------“Based on RAYS ZE40 forged aluminium wheels which are used in the Global MX-5 Cup race series, the 17” multispoke design is finished in Dark Gunmetal with contrasting embossed logo in white.”
Now to me “based on” means that they are NOT ZE40 Rays.
Over to those that know as it may be important to customers in the process of buying to be aware of exactly what they will be getting.
You are correct, they are not ZE40s they are based on them. So they are made by Rays exclusively for the 30th AE and are based on the ZE40 style. Same manufacture, forged and engraved. Not sure there is any Ambiguity here.
Funny how something like this SE can suddenly make you aware…in my case of the colour…Orange! Today I’ve seen the following in Orange:- Nissan GTR, Mustang, 2 Ford ST’s and a Arbarth/Fiat 500, and maybe others I’ve missed.
