First thing I did this morning was to power up the ipad to see the reveal. Why no UK location ? - thought we are one of the biggest customers.
The swoop bonnet certainly harks back to the mk2/2.5
Very BMW Z lines around the rear
Is it just me or has anyone else think corvette-ish or corvette-esque ?
We have to appreciate each incarnation they make is a hard act to follow -( Richard Hammond got this point spot on in his Top Gear review of the mk3.
To be honest it took me a long time to like the mk3 - I didnāt like the flat bib shaped bonnet but loved the bulged wheel arches - no offence to mk3 owners.
To put it simply - All MX5 are cool ! Including the new one.
Great that the MX5 family will continue to grow.
Like everyone here look forward to seeing it in the flesh/metal
If it had a folding hard top option with paddle shift auto then I would probably do likewise, although thereās no subsitute for actually driving it for a good long time to make sure itās comfortable enough.
Saw this at work this morning when I got here at 6am ⦠strangely, my initial thought was āeeeeewwwwwwā, but after looking at it a few times I really do like it. It looks smaller than the NC, which is a good thing (I do like the Mk3, but I think itās too big).
For a gadget man like myself, LOVE the fact that screen pops out the top ⦠how cool is that!!
Only think I (personally) āhateā ⦠yes āhateā are those awful wheels. They look too small and iāve never 'got the dark coloured wheels āthingā.
Canāt wait to see it in the flesh, and as the person in charge of the GT6 Nights iām hoping thisāll make an appearance in my online dealer very soon !!!
Fourth-generation roadster shown to media at new event facility in Barcelona
Latest model features a unique KODO design and SKYACTIV Technology
Ā
Leverkusen/Barcelona, 4 September 2014. Mazda revealed the all-new Mazda MX-5 this morning to an exclusive audience in Barcelona and simultaneously around the world at two similar events in Japan and the U.S. The fourth-generation model, which features a distinctive adaptation of the KODO ā Soul of Motion design, received a very warm reception from around 250 media in attendance. It will go on sale in EuropeĀ in 2015.
The all-new MX-5 comes with SKYACTIV Technology, including specially tuned SKYACTIV-G petrol engines and the first rear-wheel drive version of the SKYACTIV-Chassis. Weighing 100kg less than the outgoing model and with the lowest-ever centre of gravity, the new edition of Mazdaās iconic roadster enhances theĀ Jinba IttaiĀ ārider-and-horse-as oneā responsiveness and agility that has always made the MX-5 the essence of driving fun.
The weight reduction also puts the new MX-5 at a level comparable to the original model, which revived and revolutionised the market for affordable lightweight sports cars when launched back in 1989. More than 947,000Ā have been produced over the past 25 years, and the MX-5 holds the Guinness World Record as the all-time bestselling two-seater sports car.
āMazdaās current win streak is driven by our highly acclaimed new models, and the all-new MX-5 should only add fuel to the growth engine,ā says Mazda Motor Europe President and CEO Jeff Guyton. āBuilt for the love of driving, this car underscores what Mazda is all about. It will certainly give our brand an added boost.ā
Accordingly, āLong live the roadsterā was the motto of the unveiling, which also marked the debut of Mazda Space, the companyās brand-new European event hub in Barcelona. The event was streamed live to the MX-5 25thĀ anniversary website and can be viewed at:www.mazda.com/stories/craftmanship/mx-5/mx-5_25th/thanksday. Guests were invitedĀ to share their thoughts about the facility and Mazdaās new roadster on Twitter and Facebook at #mazdaspace, #longlivetheroadster andĀ #MX5.
Yes, Ive been thinking about my earlier post on buying one but I only use my current mk3 at weekends and the odd spin into work on a sunny day. £20k on a weekender? I might be pushing my luck with the wife on that one.
I like it far better than the Mk3, but that would not be hard. Interesting how so many people see so many cues from other cars in the new carā¦that I guess is what designers would have been trying to achieve while agonising over a world sports car. They cannot be all things to everyone but need to see a return of investment by trying to appeal to as many as possible.
Looks it may end up with a relatively limp 165 BHP again in 2ltr form. If so, thats one cue missed in a year when Peugeot offer the RCZ-R turbo with 1600cc & a very creditable 270bhpā¦slightly more than a BBR Cosworth SCād Mk3.5.Ā
I hope there is a nice surprise Ā in powertrain options. I think āforget the Euroblob Stodgemobile Ā performanceā¦itās about the twistiesā has worn thin.
Believe me, my friendās (staggering) BBR SC Mk3.5 missile only really came alive with BBRs SC & developed suspension package. Runs in standard cars are now simply boring.
Hopefully the new car wonāt look like Mk3 4X4s of old and send folk screaming off to Eibach. Itās a chance to deliver an excellent affordable sports carā¦provided they give it enough BHP so Skoda Octavias VRSs cannot nuke it in a straight line. Ā Ā
Got to keep the marketing people doing their jobs and that is something else to fill the void between now and when production begins, your choice for engine will probably be closer to available purchase time or when the car has more public outings, (e.g, Paris Motor-show) so that the press have a hook to want to cover the car again.
Going to wait to see it in the flesh. Called into Victoria Park Mazda in Cardiff on my way past today and the sales guys there seemed quite excited, quick to show me the launch video and official launch pictures.
