The Silverstone Classic 23rd-25th July 2010

Here is the email I receaved from Neil Jones, Team Leader at Goose Communications. They are in charge of the Silverstone Classic…

"Dear Peter

As part of the planning procedure carried out for the Silverstone Classic event each year, we have again visited the site this week to monitor developments.

As you will be aware, for the Silverstone venue to accommodate the Moto GP in June this year extensive track alterations have had to be made so making it suitable for the bikes. In addition, with the circuit now being awarded the 17 year contract to host the British round of the FIA F1 Championship much needed modifications are being made to both the GP track and support buildings such as the grandstands around the circuit.

The pedestrian bridge over the National circuit which brought spectators into the infield display near to the Medical Centre has gone and the earth around flattened. The infield area which housed the Fun Fair, some of the trade stands and Bonhams’ Auction marquee last year has been lost to us for car displays due to the introduction of a massive run off area and catchment fence where the new bike circuit joins the National straight.

As advised to all car club co-ordinators in my first Silverstone Classic 2010 communication sent out from November last year, a result of the site alterations, which certainly are a benefit to the venue, the overall area available on the infield for classic car club displays at this year’s Silverstone Classic has been reduced.  Add to this the fact that we have an unprecedented number of clubs registering their intent to attend this year’s event (up more than 50% on a record 80 clubs in 2009) and that clubs in general are predicting an increase in car numbers for their display area, display space is now at a premium.

The ticket office for this year’s event opened in November 2009, 14 weeks earlier than in 2008 or 2009! At that time we set the first cut-off date for the car club BOGOF discounted ticket offer, unique to car clubs, as 31st March. If sales continue in the manner that they have done so far we may well be out of infield car club display space by this date, 31st March.  You have 34 bookings against SC10MX5 so far – well done!

To avoid disappointment we are, therefore, advising all registered clubs to encourage their members to take advantage of the current discount ticket offer and buy now, before 31st March, in order to secure an infield display for their car. At that date we will review the situation based on tickets sold and what capacity, if any, remains for further BOGOF ticket sales.  You will appreciate that we are not able to sell tickets for display spaces we cannot deliver, and therefore will have to remove the BOGOF offer from our website as soon as we reach capacity after March 31st.

We appreciate your assistance regarding this matter which is in the interest of all parties concerned.

 Best regards

 Neil "

So I didn’t just make it up to sell more tickets.

Sounds like quite a few changes this year then. Let’s hope we get a good pitch.

Can I ask, what is our quota? How many cars spaces has the MX5OC been allocated this year?

OK I take it all back, it’s genuine - but how do the ticket sales people know when each club has reached its quota? I was sold a ticket for the MX5OC stand using our code, so assume there’s space left!

We don’t know what the quota is, they have a maxium capasity. When that capasity is reached they will then divide up the infield based on ticket sales between now and the 31st March. So in other words we don’t know what we’re getting till the end of the month, but the faster our members buy there tickets the bigger our pitch will be.

I figured it would be something like that - allocation by demand. So do we know how many places have been booked to date? I notice they mentioned 34 but I guess that was some time ago as it’s a long way off the 200+ of last year. Have they updated it since?

 Just tried to book my ticket, and it would appear the the promotion code is not coming up or is invalid…{#emotions_dlg.angry}

Just have to wait now for a call back…{#emotions_dlg.thinking}

Panic over…now booked…{#emotions_dlg.bigsmile}

Booked mine, it’s going to be my first time, can’t waitBig Smile

I booked this on Tuesday (30/03/2010), I used the SC10MX5 code and my order went through without any problems. The 3-day ticket was around £77 including the booking fee.

So how many OC cars have booked using the code/how big a stand has the MX-5OC been allocated for the 2010 event?

We have just booked a 3 day ticket for this online, was £80 plus all the various booking fees - not been to any of the meets yet, and the car is still undergoing some desperately needed TLC (suspension, bushes and a new front wing to replace the rather rusty one that’s on there) so we need to get cracking to make sure it’s all done by July!

Just need to book camping now

Pretty excited at the prospect of this - definitely something to look forward to and it’ll be nice to meet some fellow MX5 owners

Kathryn and Dave

Just to let all of you know that

Jedward are now playing on saturday night o the joys.Confused

god help them at silverstone that all I can say

Sick Who do I need to contact to cancel my ticket and get a refund?

Seriously, its supposed to be rocking and racing, thats a joke…!

I would like to think that the organisers have more sense than to have only them on the bill. If not it will I feel be a big mistake and drive people away.

Thought this was a wind up but having been on the website it seems it’s not - apparently Ruth Lorenzo and Danyl Johnson, also of X Factor infamy are on the same bill…

Looks like an early supper on Saturday then

Sounds like a Simon Cowell has-beens reunion tour. Have just had a look at the Silverstone website and it looks like there are a few other acts that may be worth watching so all is not lost. I think it will be a bit of selective watching though. Perhaps we were spoilt last year with “Santana”.

·  So much to see and do<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

The 2010 Silverstone Classic (23-25 July) will be the best yet, with more racing, more classic cars, more live music and more to see and do both on and off-track for the whole family.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Proudly carrying the tag of ‘the world’s biggest classic racing festival’, the Silverstone Classic is much more than a glorious celebration of motor racing heritage. It is a complete event dedicated to providing a fabulous day or weekend out for everyone.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

“We are building on the success of the 2009 event to make the Silverstone Classic bigger and better,” said Daniel Ward of Classic Historic Racing Ltd, the event promoters. “We are proud to be promoting the World’s biggest classic racing festival, which is a platform for a great day of family entertainment.”<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

On-track is a stellar line-up of races and this will be proper classic racing, not theatre, as 1000 hard-charging racers do battle in 800 cars spanning seven decades of motor racing heritage. In total, 23 races will cover Grand Prix cars, sports, GT, saloon and single-seater racing cars from 1930 to the 1990s. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

“An unrivalled quality of racing will be the biggest feature of the 2010 Silverstone Classic,” said event director Nick Wigley. “We are this year celebrating 60 years of the Formula 1 World Championship, which started at Silverstone in May 1950, with three dedicated races to capture the romance, development and British influence on motor sport. We are also proud to add, this year, the hosting of the launch of the Royal Automobile Club Historic Tourist Trophy for a wonderful grid of pre ’63 GT cars. Indeed, across two full days of on-track action, there are mouth-watering races for every enthusiast.” <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Live music will again be a big feature of the Silverstone Classic in 2010, with major concerts on the evenings of both Friday (23 July) and Saturday (24 July). Entry to both concerts will be included within the circuit admission charge.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

On Friday night, Silverstone will rock to the sounds of two classic British bands from the 1960s and 1970s, when The Yardbirds and Dr Feelgood take to the stage to thrill the thousands of visitors to the opening day of the Silverstone Classic.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Then, on Saturday evening, the story comes bang up to date with a show including Stars from the X Factor, with Jedward, Danyl Johnson and Ruth Lorenzo, and The Rick Parfitt Jnr. Rock Band. Rick junior has rocking in his genes, as he is the son of legendary Status Quo member Rick senior.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Before the live concert starts on Saturday evening, there will be an important auction of classic cars and memorabilia, organised by Bonhams. Bonhams Motoring Department is the largest auction house to hold scheduled auction sales of classic and vintage cars and memorabilia, so a spectacular line-up of road and race cars is assured.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

On Friday evening, a very special race will feature celebrities from the worlds of radio, TV, music and entertainment racing head-to-head to raise funds for the Bobby Moore Foundation. The stars will climb into a fleet of specially race-prepared 500 Abarths and take to the famous Silverstone Historic Grand Prix circuit in a half-hour race including a Le Mans-style pit-stop and driver change. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Along with the racing and rocking, Silverstone will be packed with off-track activities and attractions to make it a weekend to suit the whole family. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Over 100 car clubs displaying 6000 privately owned classic cars will pack out the infield, while new for 2010 is an area dedicated to hot-rods. Street car shoot-outs and Group B rally cars of the early 1980s will add to the sheer diversity of attractions. Funfairs, shopping malls, hot-air balloon fly-outs and air displays are all part of the show. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Fans of two-wheel action have not been forgotten, either, as motorbikes will play a big part in the Silverstone Classic, with the legendary Harley-Davidson marque at the heart of the two-wheel attractions.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Already scheduled to appear on track are seven-times TT winner Mick Grant and current lady TT rider Maria Costello. Both will ride the charismatic late-1970s Suzuki XR69 F1 machines in Heron Team colours. Drag bikes, parades, classic bike areas all add to the event’s two-wheel appeal.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

“The Silverstone Classic is the biggest and best classic racing festival in the World as well as Europe’s most entertaining car-themed event,” said event director Nick Wigley. “Flat out fun for all the family is core to the attraction of the Silverstone Classic.” <o:p></o:p>
