It’s usually a notchy gear change 1st to 2nd that give trouble with a cold gearbox, when warm the change gets better.
No harm in changing the oil, do you know if it’s been done?
Can also grease the gear shift ball (top) and add some turret oil.
the oils never been changed, 52k on the clock nc1 1800, 5 speed box.

An oil change won’t hurt, but it’s not guaranteed to fix the problem.
Whats it like changing gear without the engine running.
Definitely do the gear oil and most certainly the diff oil.

Has the brake/clutch fluid been changed lately?
Is the gear change any easier if you pump the clutch a few times before changing from 5th to 4th gear?
No harm in trying a fluid change. Relatively cheap and easy job to do.
