I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Tyres
Recently bought a 2012 Mk 3 NC looking at replacing all the tyres, currently on the rear are Kumho and on the front General, tyres are 205/50/R16, the rear seems slippy and does not create confidence when driving in wet conditions, plus the roads where I am are terrible anyway. After some recommendations for a good all round tyre.
If you read around to the forum on tyres whatever model the advice would normally be, matching tyres on each corner. Plenty to go on say Blackcircles just as example, you’ll get differing opinions on what’s best depending on your budget. I’ve had the Kumhos on 5 different cars now, in varying sizes, 16” 17” and only this week a full set of 18” on my daily driver, perfect for my needs👍
18” on a MX 5? I do find tyres a bit of a mine field, because everyone’s opinion is different. Had a new budget set of 17” tyres fitted to my Corsa (1ltr) and the driving experience was improved drastically from the mis matched nonsense that they had🙄
I lost confidence in the Kumhos I had fitted as I was finding them a bit slippy on greasy roads after light rain as we’re getting so often now. I fitted Uniroyal Rainsport 5 and much happier with the grip.
Just put a pair of Michelin CrossClimate 2 tyres on the rear of my ND1 this morning. Ordered online through the BlackCircles website and a local garage in Llanishen, Cardiff put them on.
The front has the same tyres, by the way.
Whether you want all season tyres on yours, of course, is up to you. In addition, they’re pricey in comparison to other tyres but I consider them a good investment for the future (longevity, very good in conditions in the UK).
I have 4 x Firestone Roadhawks on my 2008 1.8 and even with ‘enthusiastic’ driving in this wet weather, I’ve never had a moment to worry. Although, TBH, I do ease off around roundabouts as I’ve had RWD pick ups (L200 and Ford Ranger) who were skittish in the wet.
I’ve been researching the 205/50R16 tyres for my ND2. Yes, R16 are more difficult to get, but they are so much more comfortable than R17. Here are the performance tyres I found in order of personal preference:
Michelin Pilot Sport 5
Continental Premium Contact 6
Toyo Proxes TR1
Bridgestone Turanza 6
Vredestein Ultrac+
Yokohama ADVAN Fleva V701
Personally I ended up buying Michelin PS5. Those tyres have more grip in wet then the 6yo stock Bridgestone Potenza S001 had in dry! Michelins are the best all rounder IMHO. Did a wet track day on them. Super confident in all sorts of wet conditions.
Thanks, have booked in for a set of PS 5’s to be fitted next week. Looking forward to a much better drive. Did look at the Cross Climates as well but we don’t get enough snow in the South East, probably just jinxed it😀
I put Yokohamas on my Caterham 7 and then later also on my NC. Great tyres. Did track days with the 7 and ride outs. Also European tours. The MX-5 has also been to Europe and as a “car of interest” was allowed to do circuits with classic cars at Spa in Belgium. To see the tread smeared across the tyre after these circuits is amazing. Never lost grip, much. Was I just going faster?? The tread quickly re appeared at normal speeds on normal roads . Pretty good longevity given the use they are put
