Hi everyone, my galaxy grey mx [2006mk3 ] has all the paint coming off the calipers, these are painted red which i am not a lover and do not think it goes with colour of the car, i was thinking of a gold colour but not sure also what make off paint would i use [hammerite??], also there is quite a lot of flaky paint coming off the insides of the wheels which i would like to make better, any advice in this area? thanks. steve
I use Hammerite on my calipers and apart from the odd touch up, I’ve had no problems. There are of course, specialist paints for calipers, if you want to go down that route. As wheels aren’t subject to high temperature change, again, I’d use Hammerite.
Which colours? As a contrast, I’d go for yellow or orange, or for a blend, silvery blue. For more ideas, do a search for ‘colour wheel’ and this will give you ideas for contrast and complimentary colours.
I got gold on mine and they look great I’ll get a photo up for you soon watch this space Hammerite
I have just done my callipers and surrounding metalwork, in black Hammerite, and it looks terrific.
Blue goes with gray/silver, but it is a personal choice that only you can make.
M-m
Hi everyone thanks for the replies, yes I am going to paint the inside off the wheels with silver Amerite, but still not made my mind up what colour to do my calipers, any photos would be great if poss, thanks again, Steve
Be careful using hammerite on the calipers. I did mine with yellow smooth hammerite and then wished I hadn’t during the next track day. It softened with the heat which caused braking problems and ruined the finish.
Might be Ok if you only ever do gentle road driving (but then why do you have an MX5!).
I Detailed a mates MX-5 Last year
Painted the Hubs black and the Calipers Gold with Hammerite paint:

That looks great, Chris. Did you take the calipers off before painting them or can you do it in situ?
I did them in situ
Just a small brush and take time …don’t rush
Hi Christ, thanks for the photos, never thought about painting the hubs but yes that’s the way to go, also like the gold calipers , so probably going to go with the same, cheers Steve
Whoops sorry Christ I ment Chris, sorry Chris, LOL. Steve
another +1 for gold but then mines BRG so looks good, I painted the disks and dust plate after using a wire brush in a drill (a must have!) and then some rust cure and a nice coat of heat proof paint… umm up to 450c iirc
hi Dickymint, thanks for the reply, yes i am going to derust [is that a word?] before i paint, 95% sure i am going for gold. thanks again. steve
I’ve painted the calipers on my Winning Blue sport red. Looks amazing against the blue but also it looks like it could be authentic which I think is important for the car to not look so tacky. But all a matter of preference!
Hi sj89, thanks for the reply, erm yes I know what you mean about looking tacky which I am trying hard to avoid, I have bought some proper calipers paint ( not cheap) which is blue hopefully it looks ok with my dark grey ( galaxy grey) mx if not I will go back to the red that is on there now, can anyone tell me what the correct caliper colour should be for a 2006 mk 3 , thanks. Steve. P.s. Only painting them as a lot of paint as vanished of them
Steve have you considered black? I think a nice set of glossy black calipers would look a treat against the galaxy grey.
If you were interested in seeing pictures of my calipers they’re here:
hi sj89, yes i considered black but i am painting the inside of the wheels black so thought i would try blue [paint bought] hopefully it will not look out off place, but the one thing about paint is you can always try a different colour, steve
Grey car, Blue calipers
