What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 1)

A velcro sponge pad and a backing pad to fit an electric drill came in the post yesterday, so with a squirt of Purple Polish I cleaned up the head lights on both the MX5’s.

One of the cars is in for MOT on Monday so £3.55 well spent I hope.

I think Mazda change the fogs and bezels every so often just to break up the day.

I changed the lights in both my '03 and my '05 and they were both different.

Changed oil and filter this morning. Not Mazda bits but only £17.50 for a crossland filter & 5 litres of QX semi synth 5w-30w from ECP. Quite happy with that.

Changed the front pads on my MK1 today. There not bedded in yet but there already better than what they replace.

Changed the number plates for the private plate SWMBO bought for my birthday. I must remember to get the used approved warranty changed to match it.

Incidentally, hats off to DVLA for a very easy to use and efficient online portal to facilitate the change.

Because the weather has been so hot lately i got the car out of the garage at 6am as i loose the shade at around 9am.

I gave the car a good wash and waxing, the waxing had to be done in direct sun light and it is now ready for tomorrows meet up with a good friend Barrie (bettabuilda) and then on to Chester where we will meet up with more 5ers and a run out around North Wales…the home of my birth.

See you tomorrow Barrie and don’t forget your folding chair.

Washed it, while keeping a close eye on the smoke rising from Winter Hill not far away…

Ditto, scary thing is i was ‘up the Pike’ on Wednesday with the dog!

Drove the Gala Queen in my Village Gala Parade

Starting to get all the camping and personal kit in the car ready for this summer’s trip. First stop Landstuhl, Germany, then on to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to join 50,000 bikers for BMW Motorrad Days (my BMW GS Adventure staying at home this year). Then on through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia aiming for Durmitor National Park in Montenegro. Then on to Kotor and home following Croatia coast.

Don’t know if it will affect you but Bosnia intrudes into the Croatia coastline and so you’ll probably have to pass through it for a few miles. I only mention it as our bike Ins didn’t cover Bosnia, Albania or Macedonia… it may be worth checking if your ins is the same.

Unless anythings changed I have never known a check on insurance on the crossing on that coastal section although last year, for once, we had insurance as we bought the worthless piece of paper at the Metkovic crossing a few days before. If they have started selling insurance on that crossing 30 Euros for about a 5 mile trip to Bosnia is pricey but on the holiday cost its nothing.I have not found a UK insurer to offer a Green Card for Bosnia since about 2008.

Well, when we met up Dave, at Lymm services, your car looked fantastic! It certainly attracted a lot of interest today and not just at the meet and run out.  Folk on the motorway, when I was following you, were all over it, pointing and staring. Great stuff mate. A well turned out car!

Barrie.

Had a great day on a run to Powis Castle with the guys and girls from North West Midland MX-5 Owners Club.

Wonderful weather and a fabulous route through gorgeous country side with a great bunch of people and stunning motors. Perfect.

Motorway trip to Leeds and back, for the first time scored over 50mpg

Fitted a new clutch.

The spigot bearing was screaming like a banshee and, as suspected, when I had the thing apart I discovered that it was pretty much seized solid.

First time doing a clutch. The biggest job I’d completed previously was a cambelt change and water pump.

Doing a clutch change on axle stands was interesting. Really I needed to be a 3 armed body builder; bench pressing a gearbox back into pace whilst trying to keep everything aligned and bolt it back in was “un-fun”…

Hey ho - it’s done now, and my gear changes are now near-silent…

Last Week.

I changed the Aircon clutch on my 94 Eunos then topped up the R134A refrigerant.
Took about 5 hours to do. ( no manual covers this job most garages say this job is not possible )

Look for AC clutch repair online, there are not many variants so no need to look under Mx 5.

Drain water, remove radiator, loosen belt , take off power steering pump ( leave hose attached and tie out of way )
Undo nut on AC clutch ( 10mm socket hold clutch with waterpump pliers )
Lever off clutch cover, clean inside to find circlip then remove circlip, remove pulley,
Remove circlip from inside electromagnet and disconnect wiring.
(Find spacer washer from inside the clutch outer and fit to new cover )
Fit all new parts in reverse order.
Fit new drive belt if required.
refit radiator, top up with water and burp the system with heater on hot.
start engine to check everything works.
Top up Ac system if required. ( kit available online or good car parts stores )

Run AC and Chill Out.

Fitted a pair of these today.

Upgraded my door speakers to a pair of JBL Stage 8602s. Nothing fancy, but good reviews and I got an open box deal for a bargain price on eBay.  Next weekend hopefully fitting red LED footwell lights (for purely aesthetic reasons obviously )

Got this pile to do. And thats what happens when ya buy blind.
