What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 1)

Not even brake pads? What’s the mileage as a matter of interest?

NOPE, not even brake pads, feel free to MOT search my car J 33 DAJ i do all my own running repairs, apart from mot’s and wheel alignment my car has never seen the inside of a garage, why would i pay someone to repair/fix my car when i can do it myself.

49,271 miles.

Remembered I had a new fuel filter for my NB in the garage. Took off the old one (which might have been the original) and managed to catch most of the petrol (caught some of it down my arm and with my face despite my best efforts). Removed and drained the old filter - a surprising amount of debris came out when I drained the remaining fuel via the inlet pipe. That proved it certainly needed changing.

While the car was up on the ramps I thought I might as well adjust up the rear brake pads to reduce the handbrake lever travel.

I was going to fit the alloys but having dragged them from the depths of the garage I could see that the tyres are now past their best and the wheels them selves are more tatty than I remembered. I intend to get them refurbished and fit new rubber all round so the steel wheels and Ultragrip 9 tyres will have to stay on for now.

fitted strut brace, just back from powder coating

Installed the k&n filter in my NC today.

Decided to resurrect this.

I must be mad.

Little drive, and picked up rx8 yellow dot anti roll bars, also ordered new drop links all around and bushes and some yellow hammerite, there is a small amount of surface rust will clean with wire wool, then coat in a few coats of yellow hammerite, then hopefully next weekend have a go at fitting them.

looks like your works cut out there kev but itll be worth it in the end, mind itll be worse before it gets better, good luck mate, ex Geordie.

Took SAZ9961 out for a drive, first decent one since September last year. Had a nice route planned around Bedfordshire, starting from Leighton Buzzard. Everything started out hunky dorey. Got as far as Letchworth, and the car overheated…

This a scene very familiar to SAZ9961

But it has a happy, oddly satisfying end (I hope).

Hello

Where did you get the reversing LED bulb from? I can’t find the size of bulb to replace my ND at all!

Cheers

A.K.

I did have a couple of jobs lined up for today but the rain is absolutely tipping down. A headlight bulb failed yesterday so that was first on the cards. Second job was to fit the luggage rack for our upcoming holiday tour.

I FINALLY received the new back box I’d ordered at the Elvington Rally. I’m not mentioning any names, but I wasn’t overly impressed that it has taken SIX WEEKS to get here. I was even less impressed that I got short shrift when I asked (politely) when I finally phoned to ask when it was likely to get here. Bizarrely, they kept offering to send me the sealing gasket, which I’d also ordered at the same time, at no extra postage cost to me… as if that was any use without the back box it was obviously meant to seal!

Hopefully I can get the new exhaust system fitted before we set off for our touring holiday.

Fitted the previously mentioned stainless back box. I was going to change the entire system and have over time collected all the components to do so, but on close inspection saw that the OE system forward of the back box including the “cat” is in excellent condition, so the new replacements I’d obtained are staying in my “spares department” (corner of the garage) for another rainy day. The car looks really neat with the new mirror polished outlet pipe, rather than the rather crusty old one. The “new” exhaust note is more muted than I had expected, no bad thing. An added bonus is that an occasional slight rattle under acceleration, that I’d always suspected to emanate from the previous back box, has gone.

A couple of days ago I had cleaned up the alloys and realised that only two were not very nice along the edges (where a previous owner had kerbed them some years ago). I decided have a quick look online for replacements to see if I could find some the same, in good enough condition to use without having the full set reconditioned. I was lucky enough to find a set of four wheels and tyres for less than £100, with a pair of really nice looking ones among them. I drove 110 miles each way to fetch them on Wednesday evening - how it rained!

I had a full set of tyres fitted to the wheels today. Jobs now all done.

Holiday trip in the car starts Monday, hard top will be staying at home - roll on summer?

I think I’ve located the source of a rattle in my passenger footwell  the true test will be tomorrow when I drive to work. It looks to be a loose bolt behind the carpet.

Got the car out of the garage, 1st time in over three weeks and carried out my usual checks before stretching it’s legs, it was then i spotted black specs in the washer fluid bottle.

Washer bottle off and jet washed out but before refitting i took the opportunity to give the engine bay a  good clean with the jet wash, not that it needed it, but hey why not while i have the wash set up.

A short run out to be sure everything was dried off before garaging the car.

Then it was out with the Jimny to do a bit of shopping where i am 99% positive i spotted one of our new members in his vin rouge MX5…Wiganjon i believe and a very nice MX5.

A little bit more smartening work.

Jess performance gear knob, and the burnished steel surround around the speedo etc…
Burnished surrounds for the heater controls, a little bit of bling with the fake chrome back for the roll over hoops.
Clear side indicators instead of the orange ones (of course with orange bulbs).

Bought 2 front wings 2 rear wings stainless exhaust

Roll hoop. A bonnet a sill and other bits and the project goes on.

Fitted a Latvian lip spoiler. Needs fettling to fit better.

Finally embarked on the Work CR-01 restoration. Got one split. Previous owner had over did with the silicone sealant on a previous restoration.

Something similar to saz above.
I spent a happy four hours polishing my wheels, but i wasn’t happy when i tried to stand up…oh my poor back, so i spent the rest of the day flat out on the couch watching rubbish on the telly.

Finally fitted my rear rx8 yellow dot antiroll bar.

Painted the whole thing yellow, it looks good under there

Of course I had one swine of a bolt that was half disintegrated. I ended up taking hours and have up, angle grinder and drill to drill it out.

If it had come off easily would have been an hours job
