What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 1)

Just been out to check the battery voltage.

I haven’t driven the car for 2 weeks.
The battery is new, type 053, that I fitted a month ago. I’m keeping an eye on the voltage,
to get an idea of the drain.

Showing 12.28V right now, so shall give it a top up this morning.

MickAP: I wouldn’t be happy that the chassis is 100% protected without checking, just saying.

Mick when I bought the car had it on the ramps before delivery, had a real good inspection, clean as a whistle !, first thing I did (on dry roads) was to take it to be steam cleaned and completely treated (with Waxoyl type treatment actual name escapes me at moment)by a company up near Warwick, reason being intend to keep car for some years, SWMBO has said that is the last one you have for the forseeable future, unless we win the lottery that is.

Had the old girl MOT’d today, another pass and no advisories again. It’s always a relief to get it out of the way for another year ??

Just over 19 months.

At least they don’t just stop working, the range just gets shorter until you have had enough and get new batteries

Now that’s one job I’ll never have to do. My NB keys only work once they are put in the door lock…

My ND SE-L Nav FINALLY went in for the Engine Undershield recall, letter dated 13th Sept. so two months later a “Safety” matter is dealt with!

Despite having only 24,000 miles on the clock, the service interval calls for diff and gearbox oil changes at 4 and 5 years respectively.  Not knowing if these had been done (in my experience dealers are notoriously bad at sticking to time based servicing schedules), and with a track day three weeks away, I changed them today, using Ford fully synthetic 75W-90 BO in the gearbox and Mobile Mobilube1 fully synthetic SHC 75W-90 in the differential.

No chunks of metal out of either box or diff, so that’s a good start!

Whilst the car was up in the air I was going to bleed the brakes, but discovered to my shock that in my fairly large collection of tools I don’t own a 21mm socket for the wheel nuts.  I could have used the tool kit brace, but that would have meant not being able to torque them back up correctly.  21mm impact socket ordered!

Went to rebuild the rear right brake with new discs and pads plus painted calliper. That went easily, probably 10 min in total. Then had a closer look at a repair made by a previous owner on the back of the sill. Ended up getting the power tools out to clean it up, tidy up the welds before coating the area with rust convertor. Tomorrow will be paint followed by waxoil. I have a feeling the other side has been repaired to so am expecting to repeat this messing task.

In 38 years of driving I’ve never had to clean the brake calipers for aesthetic reasons.  The joy of AE30!!!

Had mine under sealed two weeks ago at MX5 City. They seem to know their stuff and were involved in the conversion of an NB (I think) auto to manual conversion for Practical Classics magazine. Took a day with fairly benign weather, I.e. it didn’t rain on the way there but hammered it down on the way back.

Could do with a roof down blast to blow out the residual smell, although Dinitrol smells a bit like creosote and we quite like it !

Pending a trackday early next month replaced the brake fluid with ATE Typ200 and checked the front brake pads.  Rear pads changed at dealers before we bought the car, and the front pads had plenty of material left on them.

As my project goes ive Painted under bonnet, wings, headlight covers, both bumpers, rear panel, boot lid and door mirrors on my mk1 Eunos  v special in the last week or 2. All off the car.

weather permitting hope to get the rest of motor done shortly.

Sort of fixed the drainage problem caused by afore mentioned under seal appointment.

Nowt  ???

another washout weekend. Not driven for weeks. Weather forecast ok for today, jobs lined up and guess what, it’s tipping down again

grumpy  ???

Same here

Eh?? You’d have expected MCX5 folk like that to have checked, cleaned and cleared drain holes following such a job???

Filled the screenwash bottle again. Need to go and buy some more for next time.

I may be doing a disservice, but everything drained before and has done since I shoved the Karcher down the flue (albeit causing the wheel bearing noise).

What I was very disappointed with was that having phoned to agree a time they could look at it, they were busy and didn’t offer to put it back on the ramp to check from underneath and was quoted a couple of hours labour charge to remove all the trim and trombone brush it, which I’m not sure is the correct procedure for the PRHT.

still, at least it’s better protected than before. … hopefully.

Edit / ■■■■■■, meant to quote Meneer but picked up the wrong post.

I treated it to an early Christmas present in the current sales, a new dash cam.

was it a Nextbase generation 2 by any chance ?
