What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 1)

Hi Roadie,

I did the first one in situ and it was ok. However, having the time now, I decided to check what I had done was ok on the first side and do the other side by taking off both of the trims. The existing hole does have a very short tubular section downwards on the reverse side but this does not connect to anything and stops just short of the metalwork. This probably does not help the fact it blocks so easily, I drilled a same sized hole 7mm (centres) away (and towards the centre of the car) from the original holes and used a modelling knife to cut through the plastic between the holes and form a slot. When this is done you will necessarily cut half way into the tubular section but I would not think that this particularly matters. This can be done in situ but I found it much easier to finally neaten up the holes using swiss files when the trims have been removed from the car. Hope this helps :+1:.

I had seen the tubing under the hole when I unblocked mine yesterday. That’s what made me think it was piped away somewhere. I would guess the bad draining is as much due to surface tension in the short piece of tubing than actual blockage. I wonder if cutting off the tubing from the back might improve things without actually enlarging the hole. The info that the tube extends close to the metalwork is useful. I won’t try drilling it out in situ.

I found that even the smallest bit of debris (such as moss flicked out of the gutter by hungry birds) blocked the small hole. If you are taking the trim off to cut off the tubular section you might as well slot the holes. I looked at the drains in my wife’s Yeti and they are massive compared. Whichever way you go it should be some improvement. Cheers.

From this.

To this.

Not sure whether to keep the red, i might change it back.

Personally I prefer the black :+1: . If the red was the same shade as the cam cover then the red would have looked better.

Washed and rotated the wheels this morning ready to be tucked away in the garage till lock down is all over :slightly_frowning_face:

How did you get engine so clean , any tips Cheers Richy aka Top Gun :+1::wink:

That first picture had me confused at first - it makes it like the scuttle is convex at the point where the drainage hole is - took me a while to realise it’s actually concave…

Think the lockdown is getting to me… :weary:

Took the wraps off my MX5 and found some paintwork damaged :pe
