What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 1)

Washed the car yesterday , first time for months, and when I washed the bottom of the front wing a lump of rust fell on the ground! Further inspection revealed that the bottom if the wing has rusted away, looks like I’ll have to have the wing off and see if its repairable or not. I was surprised as after doing lots of other body work bits and literally not using it in the rain for more than 2 years and keeping it garaged to find this , goes to show the old rust virus never sleeps!

Yes it’s a collection point at the base of those front wings for all the crud.:-1:

Dealt with the fairly bad rust under boot lid and replaced number plate lights most things from @Devin. Not too pretty but should keep things under control

Doing exactly the same, as we speak…

I realised that my line up of Japanese, French and Korean wasn’t exactly right either, but I decided to go ahead anyway as you’d have to go a very long way to find 3 cars in a row that were truly British and with red, white and blue paintwork too!

A few years ago while I was still working at the Ellesmere Port plant we made this with all British made Astra’s… I forget which letter I was holding though

Now that’s more like it!!!

First off, this arrived,

So I got under the car and did this,

I fitted this a while ago, a permanent drain valve to replace the sump plug. Fumoto is the name, no need to undo the drain plug, short length of plastic tube fits on the end, remove retaining clip, turn valve 90* and direct the flow of used oil into container. Reverse procedure and jobs done! :+1:just waiting for fully emptying of sump then on with new filter and fresh oil in the engine. TBH, takes longer to get car onto stands than do the actual job itself

EDIT:
Happy to report everything went fine! Always like to hear the engine start up, smooth and quiet. Charged the new oil filter up before fitting with some of the fresh oil too. :+1:

Well I’ve had this E-Tech Brake Caliper Paint Kit sitting on a garage shelf for a few months and having a bit of spare time at the mo (!) decided to make use of it. I’d got the black thinking it would go well with Aluminium Silver and anyway didn’t want anything too flash. So two coats all round and some silver transfers from fleabay and this is the result.

Not unhappy with it, very easy to use, and I’ve still got a virtually full tin of high gloss, heat resistant paint. So what next…

Not knowing whether you have a stainless steel back box, if it was me i’d take the back box off this weekend, polish the stainless tips and silencer up and paint the non stainless parts, but that’s just me.

Removed and cleaned the hood drain filters on my ND. You really need to be a contortionist with very strong (but dextrous) fingers. What a faff! They were quite dirty, so job done :+1:

Fitted a Lockwood grill to the NB, fitted a Zunsport grill to the ND, fitted reversing camera to the ND and removed the sill covers and Waxoyled the sill underneath. Back at work now.

My car has had a hiccough when pulling from 1000rpm in 2nd as if one cylinder was missing. It disappeared above 1500rpm. I checked the plug lead resistances and they were in spec so today I changed the plugs although they had only done 14000 miles and discovered that no 3 terminal in the coil pack was corroded, the other terminals were fine. Cleaned this up and the hiccough has gone. It will pull strongly in 2nd from 800 rpm on a fairly wide throttle, always a good sign of healthy engine. It’s still on the original coil pack and leads after 22 years. Just to add, normally I use a lot more revs but in town one often trickles along in 2nd.

Added a Brake Stopper to my ‘‘strut’’ brace

Gave it a good wash and wax. I do love to see the milky finish of the wax polish buff to a gorgeous shine! Talk about a payoff for the effort! Took the wheels off, too, to get them clean all over, instead of just the bits I can reach normally. Made such a difference.
