Fitted the MX5 Parts gear shift collar, the brass thing and added a aluminium gearknob.
It was a custom knob and was meant to have 5 grooves ( for mx5) but the guy only did 4, but still looks okay and feels good. It was only £18.50, one piece aluminium that’s been lathed in the UK.
The brass collar has reduced the neutral play of the shift lever and shifting seems quite a bit more direct, on par with my 2007 Type R gearbox now for precise feel.
I wonder if he could be persuaded to make a simple ball-shaped knob.
It seems to me the shorter the overall length of the lever is, the shorter the throw for your hand, giving more direct feel.
Less leverage will give a heavier feel though…
I spoke to him today and he said someone contacted him about a gear knob that he had seen on a forum but he had not had time to respond. Best to phone him if you want to put in an order.
He basically told me he works 6 days a week, early til late, so his little business venture seems to going well.
Can’t wait Rob, really missed this years main meet in the Welsh town i wouldn’t attempt to pronounce or spell.
Backend of the car is stripped down, removed bumper, exhaust, wheels, calipers, discs and suspension struts, new rear pads should be here tomorrow then i can start painting and reassembly.
Dave.
Took the 5 for a quick jet wash at the garage to blast off the layer of road dirt, it will get its usual wash and wax at home before Xmas.
Took my old dog as he loves a ride in the car, and he doesn’t say " Slow down, who’s that tooting? , was that a Police car we just passed?, how fast was you going?, you should know better at your age" etc…etc…
