What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

So…having discovered some slight surface rust to some metalwork behind the glove box in my 2012 NC PRHT I decided it must be time to sort out my scuttle grommets, as has been mentioned many times here.

Having removed the wiper arms followed by the scuttle cover itself, I was surprised at quite how much debris and muck had collected under there (ref photo) so I began by giving it a good old hoover and clean up (always satisfying even though no one is going to see it). This included along the bottom of the windscreen.

I carefully cleaned the area around the grommets themselves and then used a roofing sealant product to cover the grommets making them effectively water tight (I hope!). Then I put it all back together and cleaned the top of the scuttle cover, finishing it off with some silicone spray.

I have also recently replaced a few bulbs for LED (interior light and number plate lights) which do make a difference. I’ve already swapped out my dipped beam bulbs for LED and just waiting for some spare time to do the same with the side lights and fog lamps.

Coming along!

Took Nugget to his GP for his annual check up.
Nothing to report, he is very healthy.
My thanks to Furness Park Prestige and Sport.

blimey those bilsteins are better than the ones i bought off ebay for £120. gutted

Well you would be even more gutted if you saw the ones that came off my car that I sold for £120…they were immaculate !!

yeh i suppose you win some you lose some. last week i bought a mazda chrome fuel door in as new condition, for my nc granted it cost me over new price but you cant get them new and there like rocking horse s - - -second hand. like a fool i left my nb chrome door on the car when i sold it . so lost out again there.trouble is my lose some’s always seem to out weigh my win some’s Lol

Those lids are scarce now, if that’s your type of thing.
I paid £67 (new) for mine around 6 years ago, sold it for £65 delivered last year.
It wouldn’t fit the PRHT model I have now so I bought a SH one to fit that for £60. That was in great condition so a good deal.

Where did you get these?
They would go nicely with the red stitched seats on my Miyako

Out with the old, in with a Yuasa.

Beginning to show it’s age, been a bit dodgy now for a couple of weeks.

Looks great @MattyG . I bought one too  I’d be interested to know how you feel about security? I’ve used it once so far but found myself putting it in the boot while I went to collect a parcel that I knew was too big to go in the car, hence bringing the rack. I’m just nervous that anyone figuring they are suction cups could remove it in very quick time. Parking in a very public spot, or near carpark security cameras feels like a deterrent, but still a hassle if returning to the car you find it has gone. I guess I don’t fancy the odds of getting a sympathetic response explaining to an insurance company that a (not cheap) accessory can be removed with relative ease.

I’ve made space in the garage to put Becky. You have no idea how much effort, planning and ruthless decision making that took!

I thought this was the MX5 Owners club , not the MX5 Traders Club

Is this a record, how many ‘days’ did you have that one?

You remind me of Mike Brewer Geoff, ‘Wheeler Dealer’ what’s next?

Yes @anon47368822 I live in Elephant and Castle in London and I wouldn’t leave it here for sure (or I guess anywhere) so I bought the security wire from Revorack that you loop around the rack and put one end with a small bolt through the gap into the boot (which can’t be pulled thru when the boot’s closed) which means I can leave it for short periods no problem. I wouldn’t leave it over night as I reckon you could cut the wire with pliers. I’d get that as it makes me feel much better. You have to fit & remove it every time you use the rack to make the rack safe but it doesn’t take long (and it’s cheap). :+1:

Great tip, thanks! I’ll take a look for one of those. Sure, nothing is ever totally secure, but a deterrent is always good. Anything to slow slow down a thief would make the act more obvious. And roaming the streets with pliers, hacksaw, wheel-brace and stack of bricks in hand tends to make them stand out too :carpentry_saw: :wrench: :brick:

Hello all. Back in the forum, not done much since 2016 with my NC1 2.0 as went through a divorce, the Big C and a heart attack so my beloved MX-5 has been neglected over the years. Stored and covered over for three years and garaged for two years so covered only 850 miles in six years.
Now in our new house in Cornwall, I have a double garage to get stuck in. She wasn’t a bad car to start with back then and had various upgrades done by me, Sebring exhaust, upgraded side skirts, lowered 30mm and a few other mods.
Now after all this time, the weather elements haven’t been kind.
The rear arches have been completely rebuilt and painted, there was no other rust on the outside and the car is visually in excellent condition but first MOT in 5 years brought welding to the underside sills, two new front callipers and some other small things but she has passed.
Sadly tho, the underside shows so much surface rust and subframe rust but it looks a lot worse than it actually is (perfectionists, please look away at photos ).
Today and over the next few days, I’ve done transmission and diff oil changes, simple lubrications, Engine oil change, ( that oill filter was a pig! Hate where it is and was locked solid)!
Battery has always been on trickle charge and the car has never failed to start. No warning lights or nasty noises so in truth, it’s been ok except for surface rust.
So, spending time bringing her back to life to spend time going round the coast of Cornwall.

Lots of decent cars on here, enjoyed catching up after many years.
