What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Tried to remove the scuffs off my scuff plates and polish the stains off my stainless steel tail pipes.

Went to remove the tar spots only to find that 95% of them were chips in the 75,000 mile old paint. Did Mazda use black base coat?

That looks really smart! Which model is it and where did you get it from?

Itā€™s from Raceseng, took a couple of weeks which isnā€™t bad considering.
Itā€™s called Slammer, which has a verity of colours

After 23yrs Iā€™ve had to install a new battery. Went for an original Panasonic. I figured that in another 23yrs it will be good value for money to have paid a little extra for the Panasonic.

Couldnā€™t get a pic of the speedo as I was driving, but just clicked over 147,000 kms so treated to a wash and polish. Luckily itā€™s not sunny so the polish wasnā€™t too hard to get a good shine. Ā Hard to polish a hot car!

I will get a top coating on after the cup of tea

Yesterday I fitted (or rather a friend did) a new pioneer stereo, stubby aerial and new plate with BBR 200 on. The stereo and aerial are great and the plates donā€™t I think smell of cheeseā€¦ā€¦

Basically Iā€™m driving itā€¦

ā€¦I missed on the 98789 so the 98889 will have to do. This thing is soo much fun!!

I fitted the clutch pedal extension from racing beats, to compensate for being such a shorty.
I like to sit as far back as possible from the steering wheel, but have noticed a weird pain on the inside arch of my left foot - which I guess was caused by stretching my foot too much.
Hopefully this should help

Getting the part fitted was straightforward, but getting the rubber pedal cover back on was a real PITA - took over 15mins and ended up with a 1in gash on my left hand from when the trim removal tool slipped!
Just to confirm that the above picture was taken before I managed to get the pedal cover back on!

You can adjust the pedal.
Adjusting the pedal has the added bonus of reducing or eliminating clutch drag, which seem to be a common problem on our cars.
It is necessary to maintain some clearance of course but adjusting the pedal on my car made a big difference.

Is this something I could do easily (not mechanically minded and bearing in mind how long it took me to put the pedal cover back on!) Or should I just wait till when I get the car serviced?

It is a pretty awkward procedure because it is difficult to get at. If it were easily accessible- it would be a very simple job.

Having long arms can help but from what you are saying, you probably donā€™t have long arms.

Therefore getting it done professionally may be the best bet.

Whilst you were under there contorted (I still feel the pains ) itā€™s a 2 minute job to loosen off the rod and adjust it.
I did mine last year probably a half turn but need to get under again and twiddle it some more.
Info here and what open ended spanners required.

Oil change time. The first time Iā€™ve managed to unscrew the filter by hand, must be getting stronger in my old age.

Iā€™ve never managed that on my ND RF, chiefly I think because of its awkward position. Last week when I changed the oil (and diff/gearbox oils, and coolant and air cleaner and wipers) I used the ā€˜cupā€™ tool from MX5 Parts which Iā€™ve raved about here before, but this time I had no luck with it because it turned on the filter, and when I used a 3/8 extension it just served to push against the filter which also made the tool drop off. In the end I had to stuff a rag between the tool & filter. So I am back to having no fool-proof tool for removing the NDā€™s oil filter.

Yes surprised I managed to make it turn, itā€™s in an awkward position to get a grip. I did use a filter removal tool just to nip it up from hand tight last change, not much though.

I suppose it might be a good idea to check the dimensions of the new filter and see whether your tool fits it properly, in order to be able to predict any possible future removal trouble.

More likely you got weaker before you tightened the last one.

Well yes, but it was sold by MX-5 Parts as THE tool for that particular filter ā€¦ on their website and when I emailed them for reassurance. It might possibly be that it is indeed THE tool but, being pressed from thinnish steel, it distorts with use and is a nice tight fit for only a very few operations.

The story of my love life!!!
