Snap! June 19th is my Big Day. Must make resolution not to keep telling people how cheap and easy it was to mend cars built 40-60 years ago.
I’ve just watched the video. Great seeing the riders view, especially as it was a blue FS1E, as that was the same as mine. I knew they had gone up in value, but wouldn’t swap my MX5 for one!
Mine was ‘restricted’ but the guy who sold it to me was a dab hand with ‘improving’ things, I was doing 62 mph before I knew it… might have been 50 at a push though…
We are obviously from the same era and similar age. I started getting my pension in February and my wife, Ann gets her’s at the end of May
I know we’re going a bit off topic here but I just thought I’d upload a photo of me and my wife on my FS1E back in the day.
You can guesstimate the age/generation of a biker by what make/model they learnt to ride on. Fizzies belong to one age group and CG125s belongin to the “slightly” younger generation. Owner/riders who cut their teeth on such machines tend to be a bit more “mechanically” minded than today’s young riders - but, I suppose we could say the same thing about car drivers. When things needed fettling/fixing, it was often necessary to get your hands dirty.
Honda SS50 (1970/71)
Fitted my new exhaust yesterday, Japspeed decat pipe and eight nine stainless cat-bat system.
It sounds good and not too boomy.
I think the one that came off was the original, which I think is pretty good for a 28 year old car!!
FS1E, AP50, CB50 was what my age group was riding until we reached 17 and aimed for the 250’s.
Did you and your mates then graduate to aircooled RD250s or LCs?
I had 3, RD 350’s. 2 standard and one YPVS.
I wore them all out due to knee down riding on track and streets.
It then progressed to the RD 500LC which ate tires and chains at an alarming rate.
This was a great machine, which I used to take out on rainy days, so that I could aim for manhole covers on roundabouts with the back wheel, so that it stepped out and then I could power off up the road.
We were all indestructible in those days.
Less traffic on the roads and it also taught me so much about anticipating the people in or on other vehicles, when they were waiting to pull out at junctions.
Even when road racing on pedal bikes, you never lose that awareness…
The RD250 was probably the most popular, then progressing to bigger machinery the Suzuki GS500/550 and 750 were quite popular in our area for some reason, more so than larger Yamaha or Kawasaki, the mechanic at the local dealer had a Honda CBX, that was quite something.
Attacked my front lower wishbone rounded nut… and won!
all removed now ready for cleaning up and protecting.

wash/vac the N/S seat . The amount of brown dirt that came out . Next job will be to use fabric/seal protector when dry… I here you say why only the N/S well when i got the mx5 in october it had seat covers fitted. As i don’t like covers i removed them only to find the O/S seat was worn and a hole in the side. So had a new original mx5 cover fitted .
Interesting. A good wet vac of the seats is in my to-do list.
Where did you get the replacement seat cover from?
Hi Wardy5. I’ve got a NC MK1 . MX5 restorer have them in stock. NS and OS.
