What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Gave the engine bay a clean clean. Detailing brush, Auto Glym Engine Bay Cleaner, and Auto Glym Vinyl and Rubber care

Driven it 4 hrs 45 min up the road to part-exchange it (no prizes for guessing where this is)…

…for another MX-5  Apparently 7.5 years of not being able to carry much wasn’t enough

Taken the offside sidelight unit out to dry the condensation.
Seems to be working, but don’t tell the wife

Sorry. I have no idea where this overhead railway is.

It’s actually an aqueduct! It’s the Falkirk Wheel, was the only thing I got time to drop in on during my 10 hours of driving that day. My last photo of that car and I wanted it somewhere interesting

I had a couple of videos of my visit to there a few years ago.
Here’s a video (not mine) from YouTube…

Thanks ckyliu and Mick! I have never visited that, as I havent been in Scotland since 2000. I have seen and marvelled at the videos about it. I just had never seen it from the angle in your photo!

Having had the calipers professionally painted in ‘Rosso’ red on our RF (which I think complement the shadow black rims perfectly), applied some MX-5 decals to add another level of interest. Thankfully, didn’t have to remove the alloys to apply… the gaps between the spokes were just big enough to apply in situ.

Found some Bosch Aerotwin blades in the shed and Bingo! they fit the 5. Result!

Professionally painted ? Yes, looks like a nice finish but they’ve painted the pads too which I can only surmise they’ve been rather lazy and cut corners.

It’s been a bit of an MX-5 heavy bank holiday, washed and polished and dressed and treated until happy with the result :slightly_smiling_face:

Popped the bonnet open, and gave the engine bay a general clean and tidy up.

Then fitted the new number plates I’ve had made (the old ones were tatty and delaminating)

Installed DRL’s from JassPerformance.

I’ve had a few instances with people not seeing me and pulling out right in front. Pretty scary.

There’s a forum entry about Galaxy Grey owners can be practically invisible in some instances and to run with headlights on or install DRL’s.

I figured as I don’t have fog lights, the most economical DRL alternative would be this easy to install kit from Jass Performance.

It would be sods law I forget to turn the headlights on when it’s sunny day. Better off to install the automatic DRL option. :+1:

Well thanks to quick response advice from TOGS Driver and Martin Young quickly poured a mix of de-ionised & tap water into the radiator overflow tank before driving her to a four-week early MOT  :crossed_fingers:
Meanwhile Bullitt had :musical_note:walked 500 hundred mile :musical_note:
Sorry  Bullitt had driven 285 miles after three months in a queue for specialist welding & undersealing :violin:

PASS…NO ADVISORIES :mortar_board:

Not even last years [slightly worn bushes on the shock absorbers] were considered relevant plus no leaks re radiator and hoses :joy:

Happy doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel !!

BUT very nearly had a TerryM1 experience as I drew up to my garage in the block. Next door had reversed out and I thought he hadn’t seen me so banged on his car. He hadn’t seen or heard me but explained he was 82 yrs…thank goodness Bullit isn’t electric !!!

Anyway…thinking of having the MOT Cert framed I’m so relieved and overjoyed

fyi Booking her in 4 weeks early didn’t make a difference to the expiry date so in effect she has a 13 month MOT…time to save pennies for respray

On the matter of DRL, I spoke to an MOT tester a year or so ago. Although there are regs for factory fit drl’s as to height, width, position etc, those fitted as an accessory apparently do not have to conform to position.

However, he did say that if they are fitted as an accessory, they must meet usage conditions of switching on with engine on, switching off at engine off and be off when headlights are illuminated. They should also not dazzle and be “E” marked.

I had aftermarket DRL’S on my Eunos. I subsequently sort of incorporated them into my side/Indicator lights by replacing the bulbs with switchback white/yellow LED bulbs which are nice and bright. I’ve had no MOT comments of any kind. That being said, they are “sidelights” and I manually switch them on when I start the car, although I’ve got the gizmo to automate it and will get around to fitting eventually :kissing_smiling_eyes:

Maybe others have more up to date info.

I too fitted the switchback led’s, switched as side lights. I found that those Chinese DRL relays didn’t last five minutes, and ended up with the lights staying on all the time! Mine has passed the MOT with no problems for years. Only with a comment from the testers that my sidelights are nice & bright :grinning:

I’ve got the switch backs on my NC. They however don’t go off when the headlights are on. Knowing this at last year’s MOT I disconnected them (pulled the fuse) and it passed no problems. Beforehand I asked the MOT tester if the bulbs are a fail, he said no and I mentioned the DRLs are an aftermarket fitment anyway. He said they are standard fit on my car (2014) but he’ll consult his manual at test time.

Moving on to last month I forgot completely to disconnect the DRLs for this year’s MOT and expected a fail. Nope all good, it passed and not a mention of the DRLs not performing as they should.

BTW in 2 years I’ve owned the car I’ve never driven in the dark. So those DRLs have never annoyed anyone at night, always a first though.

I’ve not properly looked into yet, but all these replies makes me wonder if there’s a way to modify the stock headlight wiring to make them DRL’s?
